The Psychiatric Tech is responsible for maintaining the therapeutic milieu of the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (IPU) and performing direct and indirect patient care tasks as assigned by the Inpatient Coordinator. This includes obtaining vital signs, ensuring patient safety, accompanying patients to appointments, and assisting with admissions and discharges.
The minimum education requirement is equivalent to a high school education or comparable brief vocational training, though mental health experience or some nursing school attendance is preferred. Candidates must obtain CPR certification and emergency behavior management training within 90 days of orientation.
Summary: Responsible for maintaining the therapeutic milieu of IPU, performing hygienic care and assigned procedures under the supervision of the Inpatient Coordinator. Responsibilities of Psychiatric Technician are performed on adult and geriatric age groups. Under the administrative supervision of the Director of Inpatient Services and direct supervision of Inpatient Coordinator. Responsible for designated shift as scheduled. Employee is subject to overtime and call back as required by the unit. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Performs direct and indirect patient care responsibilities as assigned by the Inpatient Coordinator, including obtaining vital signs and documenting in the patient chart. Ensures patient safety. Accompanies and transports patients to outside appointments and activities. Supervises and assists patients in recreational activities under the supervision of the Activity Coordinator. Assists in admission and orientation of patients to the unit and with discharge of patients. Makes assigned rounds to observe patient activity on units and observe for patients leaving unit unauthorized. Demonstrates ability to apply wrist, ankle, and waist restraints safely to agitated patients. Demonstrates competency in monitoring the patient’s response to restraint and seclusion. Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the unit. Performs related responsibilities and procedures as required or demonstrated. JOB SPECIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Equivalent to high school education or comparable brief vocational training. PRIOR EXPERIENCE: Prefer mental health experience and/or completion of nursing assistant program or one semester of attendance at an accredited school of nursing. SPECIAL SKILLS: N/A LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION: Certification as a Basic Rescuer in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation within 90 day orientation period and maintained throughout employment. Emergency behavior management training within 90 day orientation period and maintained throughout employment.
