The Registered Nurse will provide care in a fast-paced recovery area supporting a diverse patient population. Responsibilities include clinical assessment, care coordination, and adherence to documentation guidelines.

Deliver high-quality perioperative care in a dynamic outpatient environment where efficiency, patient experience, and clinical excellence intersect.

This role places you at the center of UVA Health’s expanding outpatient surgical network, supporting patients through critical pre- and post-anesthesia phases while working alongside highly specialized teams.

As a Pre/Post PACU RN, you will practice at the top of your license across multiple outpatient surgical settings, gaining exposure to varied patient populations, procedural specialties, and care delivery models.

The Role: In this position, you will provide comprehensive nursing care for patients undergoing outpatient surgical procedures, managing both pre-operative readiness and post-anesthesia recovery across multiple sites.

The environment is fast-paced, patient-centered, and highly collaborative, with a strong emphasis on safety, throughput, and exceptional patient outcomes.

You will work across three distinct outpatient centers, each offering unique clinical exposure: UVA Outpatient Surgery Center Broad patient population spanning pediatrics through geriatrics High-volume setting with 40–60 patients per day Large-scale operation with Phase I and Phase II recovery rooms and bedded capacity Surgical Care Riverside Focused outpatient surgical experience with 4 operating rooms Moderate daily volume of 25–50 patients Strong patient satisfaction culture and efficient throughput workflows Orthopedic Center at Ivy Road Specialty-driven environment focused on orthopedic surgery Features pre- and post-operative rooms and extended-stay capabilities Growing surgical platform with planned OR expansion A typical day includes: Conducting pre-operative assessments, patient education, and care coordination Monitoring and managing patients in Phase I and Phase II PACU recovery Collaborating with anesthesia, surgeons, and interdisciplinary team members Ensuring safe discharge planning and patient readiness for outpatient recovery Maintaining high standards for patient experience, quality, and safety metrics Additional role highlights: No nights, weekends, or holidays Minimal call requirement with incentive pay Flexible scheduling options including 8-, 10-, or 12-hour shifts (varies by site) Participation in a shared governance model supporting nursing autonomy and professional practice Why UVA Health: UVA Health is a nationally recognized academic health system where innovation, research, and clinical excellence come together to advance patient care.

Education

Graduate of an accredited nursing program required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing required within 5 years of hire.

Experience

1 year of relevant experience.

Licensure

Licensed to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.

Physical demands

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently traveling, bending/stooping.

Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs.

May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

The pay range for this role is $39.90 - $53.00 hourly.

Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.

Requirements

Candidates must be graduates of an accredited nursing program and hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing within five years of hire. A minimum of one year of relevant experience and a valid RN license in Virginia are required.
