About the role

The Physician Assistant provides acute and chronic care for trauma and emergency general surgery patients, including conducting physical exams and assisting in surgical procedures. Responsibilities include performing hospital rounds, documenting patient care, and collaborating with the trauma team under a supervising physician.

Overview The Physician Assistant is qualified by training and experience as determined by the supervising physician, may conduct physical examinations, perform inpatient and outpatient medical treatments, perform and assist with surgical and diagnostic procedures in office or affiliated hospitals, or tasks as delegated by the supervising physician which fall within the normal scope of practice of the supervising physician.

The primary work schedule for this position will be 9pm-7am for 7 days with the following 7 days off.

The physician assistant will be responsible for practicing at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital caring for primarily trauma and emergency general surgery patients.

The Physician Assistant will assist with the evaluation and treatment of trauma patients in the emergency department and those admitted to the hospital.

This will include the initial evaluation and treatment in the emergency department, hospital procedures, hospital rounds, discharging patients and any other functions performed by the supervising physician for which he/she is qualified and are delegated by the supervision physician.

The physician assistant will be an integral part of the trauma team, which includes surgical and nonsurgical residents, other advanced care providers and the supervising acute care surgeons.

The Supervising (Collaborating) Physicians is responsible for overseeing the activities of, and accepts the responsibility for the medical services rendered by a Physician Assistant.

The supervising physician need not to be physically present at all times of the services but shall be immediately available by telecommunications and within reasonable travel distance to assume or assist with patient care.

The physician and Physician Assistant are expected to understand and comply with all current laws, rules, and regulations which govern the practice of Physician’s Assistant practice applications

Responsibilities

Obtain medical history to include but not exclusive of current complaint, past medical history, family medical history, social history, medications, allergies, compliance with previous treatments and care plan, and determine which diagnostic and therapeutic procedures have been done. Provides acute and chronic patient care including, wellness physical exams, pre-operative interview and exam (H&P), monitoring therapies, minor office surgical procedures, and prescribing medications. Operating room care includes positioning patient, suturing wounds, and manipulation of the patient and use of surgical instruments as directed by the surgeon. Document patient information and care provided in patient records, and maintain department statistics. Use computer to access/enter needed data. Maintain patient confidentiality.

Qualifications

EDUCATION: Masters in Physician Assistant. Experience with patients in a surgical setting is preferred. Must be a licensed PA by the Virginia Board of Medicine and a certified physician assistant by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Current CPR certificate required. EXPERIENCE: Previous experience in surgical setting preferred. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the medical school. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.

Requirements

Candidates must hold a Master's in Physician Assistant, be certified by the NCCPA, and be licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine. A current CPR certificate is required, and previous experience in a surgical setting is preferred.
