The nurse practitioner is responsible for providing comprehensive direct patient care, including obtaining histories, performing examinations, diagnosing illnesses, and prescribing treatments. Additionally, the role involves indirect care responsibilities such as staff education, clinical research, program development, and quality improvement initiatives.
Candidates must complete a Master of Science in Nursing from an accredited college and successfully pass a National Certification Exam for Nurse Practitioners. Required qualifications also include current registration with the Alabama boards of Nursing and Medical Examiners, approval by the Athens-Limestone Hospital credentialing board, and preferably three years of clinical experience with two years post-master's.
Overview The nurse practitioner provides comprehensive direct patient care and scholarly practice including obtaining comprehensive patient histories, performing complete physical examination, ordering and performing diagnostic testing and screening, diagnosing illness, prescribing both pharmacological and other treatments for patients, and providing health maintenance and promotion interventions such as patient and family education and counseling. Also, the NP assumes accountability for indirect care responsibilities, which support patient care including staff and student education, clinical research, program development, and quality improvement.
Completion of Nurse Practitioner Masters of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
