Provide direct clinical care for hematology and oncology patients, including performing assessments, administering medications, and conducting phlebotomy. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, person-centered care and maintain accurate real-time documentation of all interventions.
Must be a graduate of a Medical Assistant program with a valid BLS certification. Preferred candidates have at least one year of experience as a Medical Assistant.
The Clinical Medical Assistant is responsible for participating in the provision of care for patients with hematology and oncology conditions. The Clinical Medical Assistant performs a variety of patient care duties within the construct of a multidisciplinary patient care team under the direction of a physician. He or she works with additional clinical and support staff to ensure safe, effective, quality person-centered care. Primary Job Function Provides all care in accordance with state and federal law as well as PCI policies, standards of practice, and prescribed workflows. Provides direct patient care in the Infusion Suite and Triage Department as assigned by Nurse Team Leaders and Clinical Managers. Displays willingness and flexibility to travel to other areas and locations as needs require. Demonstrates proficiency in venipuncture and management of vascular access devices. Performs patient assessments, including but not limited to: vital signs, height, weight, current allergies and medications, pain level, and advance directive information. Utilizes point of care testing as prescribed by the physician or advanced practitioner to obtain blood glucose and/or prothrombin time. Performs therapeutic phlebotomy. Administers medications (oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous routes) in accordance with physician and advanced practitioner orders. Utilizing available software, documents all patient interventions in real time. Interventions include but are not limited to: medication administration, procedures, virtual or face-to-face education or instruction, referrals to other specialties, organizations, and support services, and phone conversations with patients or other agents. Follows protocols for the safe handling of biohazardous materials. Assists physicians or advanced practitioners with patient exams or procedures. Responds to emergency situations in PCI offices as directed by PCI policies. Responds to information requests from patients, care partners, and third-party agents and organizations. Educates patients and care partners on plan of care within the Medical Assistant scope of practice, i.e. subcutaneous injection technique, pre-procedure instructions, travel instructions, referrals, medication directions as prescribed by physician or advanced practitioner, lab results. Provides psycho-social and emotional support to patients and care partners. Recognizes the roles of the interdisciplinary team, patient and family care partners and utilizes them appropriately as resources in planning patient care. Coordinates referrals to support services as applicable. 18. Provides clinical information to the Revenue Cycle Management Department as requested for the purposes of claims and authorizations. Participates in prescribed research training exercises to develop a proficient understanding of clinical trials. Applies knowledge gained to execute tasks prescribed by the trial. Communicates effectively with patients, care partners, members of the healthcare team, and third-party agents or organizations. Serves as a resource to colleagues and as a preceptor to new employees as directed by nursing leadership. Maintains a safe, clean work environment. Manages time effectively and delegates responsibility as appropriate. Utilizes resources in a responsible manner with a focus on cost containment. Accepts personal responsibility for professional development and growth. Respects and maintains confidential information. Demonstrates proficiency in HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) concepts. Attends prescribed classes and trainings as required by the organization and the clinical department. Performs related work as directed by the organization’s management team. Qualifications Graduate of a Medical Assistant program Basic Life Support certification HIPAA Requirements: Clinical Medical Assistant will have access to PHI and ePHI in the course of his/her duties. Applying the minimum necessary standard of HIPAA, this employee has access to the minimum amount of designated record sets required to perform his or her duties. Physical Requirements: Lifting, carrying, or moving objects up to 50 pounds. Frequent standing and walking. Periods of prolonged sitting. Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing) and fine motor skills (Venipuncture, injections). Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks. Typical Working Conditions: Environmental exposures include but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure; Biohazardous waste, Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors; Communicable diseases; Electrical shock; Floor Surfaces; Hot/Cold Temperatures; Indoor/Outdoor conditions; Latex; Lighting; Patient care/handling injuries. Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators. Environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
