The technician performs all duties of a certified histology technician, including grossing, embedding, cutting, and staining tissue specimens accurately and timely for pathologist examination. This role also involves performing high-volume Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing on multiple platforms and maintaining quality control records.
Candidates need 5+ years of Histology lab experience or relevant certification (MT, HTL, HT) combined with specific IHC experience, or a Bachelor of Science degree with clinical histology experience and HTL eligibility. Essential requirements include strong analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to multitask, and good verbal communication for teamwork.
1. Embedding & Cutting Properly orients and embeds all types of tissue with adequate speed (min.40-60 blocks per hour) Cuts paraffin blocks according to protocol with adequate speed (min.30-40 blocks per hour) and with good quality Accurately labels all slides: routine H&E, levels, recuts and special stains 2. Routine Staining Stains routine H&E slides according to protocol Evaluates quality of slides before releasing to pathologists Accurately tags slides and distributes accordingly Maintains H&E stains/reagents and equipment 3. Special Stains Stains slides on automated stainer and manually if needed, according to protocol Utilizes proper controls and evaluates control results and quality before releasing Accurately tags slides and distributes accordingly 4. Immunohistochemistry Stains slides on automated stainers, according to protocol Utilizes proper controls and evaluates control results and quality before releasing Accurately tags slides and distributes accordingly 5. Miscellaneous Competent in use and troubleshooting problems with routine equipment used: Tissue processors, embedding units, autostainer/coverslipper, cryostat, special stainers, IHC stainers Maintains QC records for assigned station, keeping microtome, water bath and cold plate in good, clean condition Assists with organizing and maintain block filing system Other duties as assigned by the Chief Tech, Histology Supervisors and/or P.A.s Participates in education programs, workshops and meetings obtaining 2 CEU's per year to enhance professional growth and remain current in histology
5+ years of Histology lab experience or MT, HTL or HT certification with two years IHC experience or Bachelor of Science degree with one year of clinical histology experience and HTL certification eligible. Good working knowledge of principles and techniques in histology. Must have a minimum of two years IHC experience. Must be able to adapt to changes in work schedule. Must possess good analytical and problem solving skills, adjusting priorities as work requirements demand. Must be able to perform multiple tasks correctly and simultaneously. Must be able to work independently and make decisions based on good judgment. Must possess good verbal communication skills and must be able to work well with all others.
