The Emergency Veterinary Assistant will support veterinarians in delivering high-quality care, advocating for pets, and educating clients, while assisting with all aspects of patient care to maintain productivity and organized patient flow. Key duties include performing triage, obtaining histories, administering treatments like IV catheter placement and injections, and monitoring patients under anesthesia.

Description Cerro Alto Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Hospital is a privately owned specialty and emergency practice committed to both healing and education. Our team of board-certified specialists, experienced emergency doctors, registered veterinary technicians, assistants, and client service professionals works collaboratively to provide exceptional medical care while fostering a supportive, respectful, and positive workplace.

As a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility, we are equipped with advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies, including a 128-slice CT scanner, fluoroscopy, digital radiology, ultrasound, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, and endoscopy. Our hospital includes full-time boarded surgery and radiology services, along with a 24/7 emergency department supported by experienced emergency veterinarians.

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Emergency Veterinary Assistant (VA) to join our Emergency and Critical Care team. This position is ideal for an experienced veterinary assistant who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is eager to contribute to high-quality, life-saving patient care.

Requirements

Support veterinarians in delivering high-quality veterinary care, advocating for pets, and educating clients. Assist with all aspects of patient care to maximize team productivity and maintain a steady, organized patient flow. Communicate clearly and compassionately with clients about individualized treatment plans and pet health concerns. Obtain thorough patient histories and enter accurate information into medical records and practice software systems. Perform patient triage to assess stability and prioritize care appropriately. Use safe and effective handling and restraint techniques during examinations and procedures. Prepare and maintain clean, sterile, and well-organized exam rooms, treatment areas, and labs. Place IV catheters and perform venipuncture, injections (IV, IM, SQ), and collect diagnostic samples as needed. Monitor patients under anesthesia using a variety of monitoring equipment and techniques. Assist in emergency procedures and provide nursing support throughout hospitalization. Foster a collaborative team environment by mentoring, guiding, and supporting fellow team members. Qualifications & Skills Proficient in triage and patient assessment in an emergency setting Skilled in placing IV catheters, drawing blood, and administering injections (IV, IM, SQ) Experienced or strong desire to gain experience in anesthesia monitoring and use of monitoring equipment Positive, adaptable team player who thrives in a dynamic, high-pressure environment Self-motivated, eager to learn, and receptive to feedback Excellent verbal and written communication skills Strong multitasking and time management abilities

We recognize the value of overnight and weekend coverage and offer additional compensation for eligible hours worked: Overnight Differential: +$3.00/hour for hours worked between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM Weekend Differential: +$3.00/hour for hours worked between Friday at 8:00 PM and Monday at 6:00 AM These differentials are separate and cumulative. Team members working eligible overnight hours during the weekend differential period may earn both differentials, providing the opportunity to earn up to an additional $6.00/hour above their base rate.
