The physician is responsible for overseeing the medical care and treatment provided by the hospice interdisciplinary team (IDT) and must consult and cooperate with the patient's attending physicians. This role involves providing direction and guidance to IDT staff and volunteers to ensure high-quality care standards are maintained for patients and families.
The role requires active participation in clinical education and training for hospice patient care, admissions, and administrative personnel. All employees must commit to fulfilling duties with high professionalism, teamwork, and a focus on continuous growth and improvement.

WHAT YOU’LL DO As a hospice home care & inpatient physician, you will partner with clinical teammates to provide VITAS patients and families with high-quality care at the most challenging point in life. Through in-person visits and telehealth appointments, you will use your compassion, communication skills and deep expertise to build meaningful relationships with your patients and the people who love them. You will see the person behind each prognosis and create care plans centered around the patient’s wishes, needs and beliefs, often working in concert with the patient’s primary care physician. With a strong sense of commitment, you will advocate for your patients, discussing goals for their care while addressing their hopes and fears. WHERE YOU’LL WORK You will spend most of your time caring for hospice patients who have been admitted to an inpatient unit (IPU) in a hospital, nursing facility or hospice house. Each IPU provides round-the-clock care for patients whose symptoms cannot be managed effectively in a home setting. Once a week, you’ll attend a formal meeting to discuss cases with members of your interdisciplinary team, including social workers, chaplains, and nurses. All these roles collaborate to provide holistic support for the patients and families we serve. WHAT’S EXPECTED FROM YOU VITAS physicians must be licensed to practice medicine or osteopathy in the state in which their program operates, and inpatient physicians must be members in good standing at the hospital or hospitals in which they provide care. In addition to being fellowship trained and board-certified or board-eligible in hospice and palliative medicine, internal medicine, family practice, or a related specialty, you should be familiar with the principles of hospice and registered with the DEA. EDUCATION Graduate of an accredited school of medicine or osteopathy with current license to practice in the state where the hospice program in located. Board eligible/certified in Internal Medicine, Family Practice, or other related specialty with a working knowledge of the principles of palliative medicine and symptom management. Must be HPM Fellowship trained and Board Certified/Eligible in Hospice and Palliative Medicine HPM Fellows Welcome!
Must be a member in good standing on the medical staff of an accredited hospital in the state where the hospice is located. Knowledge of palliative medicine, with particular emphasis on control symptoms associated with terminal illness. Registration with the Drug Enforcement Agency to write scheduled prescriptions.
