The Physician Assistant is responsible for the provision, coordination, and assurance of comprehensive medical care, including performing therapeutic, corrective, and prescriptive measures for designated patient populations under delegated authority from a supervising physician. Key duties involve educating patients and families, evaluating treatment effectiveness, prescribing necessary medical services and medications, and coordinating clinical research studies when applicable.

Position Summary

We have an opportunity to join our team as a Physician Assistant in the Surgery Department of Bellevue Hospital in affiliation with NYU Langone Health.

In this role, the successful candidate is responsible for provision, coordination, and assurance of comprehensive medical care using sound medical knowledge and pertinent standards of care, performance of therapeutic, corrective, and prescriptive measures on the designated inpatient or outpatient population, assume delegatory responsibilities assigned by supervising physician.

Surgical Oncology/Vascular Surgery/Trauma Physician Assistant Floater Job Responsibilities:

Work Schedule: Wednesday/Thursday/Friday Nights (3 shifts night schedule with floating nights to cover when PAs are off on vacation/urgent time off); cover trauma nights/consults on Wed/Thursday nights and Friday nights on Surgical Oncology/Vascular surgery (dedicated on Friday nights to cover Surgical Oncology/Vascular Surgery)

Schedule: 6pm-630am, 3 night shifts, Float from Sunday-Thursday night if other night PAs for Surg onco/vascular are off, in particular (Sun/Monday night shift) and (Wed/Thursday night shift)

Inpatient Role: Consistently provide high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, and discharge summaries

  • Assist with inpatient consults, discuss external hospital transfers with attendings, floor work; assist with any emergency patient related concerns on the service; admission h&p; initial orders, post-Op orders; post-Op checks; order and follow-Up on diagnostic testing; invasive consents; overall assessment, triage and therapeutic management of the patient; manage treatment plans with the in-House residents/Attendings, etc.)
  • Assist with bedside procedures (ABG, Labs, possible IV placement, NGT placement, vac changes, etc.)
  • Additional coverage 1-2 pts for Breast/Endocrine Surgery services
  • Help with management of the surgical patients overnight
  • Wednesday night – d/c summaries surg onc and vascular if time permits; follow-up patients from intern sign out vs. trauma surgery/consult
  • Thursday am – round with vascular and/or surg onc if time permits
  • Thursday night – H and P’s surg onc/vascular surgery) ambulatory first cases only, d/c summaries surg onc and vascular if time permits/vs. trauma surgery/consults
  • Every evening: late post – op checks; admission H and P’s from overnight patients; seeing consults when third year surgery resident is scrubbed – these can be staffed with the vascular fellow directly or with the resident/chief in the OR for vascular consults and surg oncology respectively.
  • Maintain adequate account of coverage concerns with timely communication with Chief PA, Attendings; Admin Staff
  • Demonstrates expert clinical judgment skills to function in an independent role
  • Must have the ability to work in a high stress, dynamic, busy clinical setting with changing organizational climate
  • Must have the ability to be self-directive and to demonstrate initiative in addressing the responsibilities of the position
  • Must maintain the highest degree of professional judgment under the supervision and guidance of a licensed physician
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as required by the department/division

Additional job responsibilities

  • Educates patient and family to facilitate and promote healthy adjustment to new or changed health patterns.
  • Evaluates treatment and health care plans for effectiveness and modifies per clinical standards and practice protocols
  • Performs delegated clinical duties effectively and efficiently.
  • Practices as a member of the allied health staff according to the rules and regulations of the Medical Staff and bylaws as outlined in the delineation of privileges.
  • Prescribes medical equipment, devices, physical and occupational therapy, and home health services per practice protocol.
  • Prescribes in-patient and discharge medications according to New York State law, including controlled substances with DEA authorization
  • Physical stamina, manual dexterity, visual and aural acuity to perform responsibilities.
  • Previously demonstrated ability to facilitate group processes and work cohesively and collaboratively as member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, creative problem solving and excellent critical thinking skills
  • Uses evidence-based health care literature to advise and support appropriate practice changes within the designated service.
  • Participates in the development and monitoring of patient outcomes per established practice protocols for purposes of quality and performance improvement.
  • Serves as a clinical expert and resource for the education of peers and other health professionals.
  • Maintains PA board certification.
  • Maintains annual CME requirement for re-appointment and privileging.
  • Maintains current expertise in area of practice.
  • Promotes own professional growth and development in clinical role.
  • Functions as a respectful member of the health care team.
  • Participates in designated activities related to professional physician assistant practice standards.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the organizations
  • Core Values and incorporates them into the performance of responsibilities.
  • Facilitates Patients throughout and efficient process during patients’ admission and discharge.
  • Facilitates the continuity of care across the continuum of services, e.g. home care, other facilities, appointments with MDs etc.
  • Provides consultation about the therapeutic regimen to the nursing staff responsible for the patients care in the hospital setting.

Minimum Qualifications

  • To qualify you must have a Physician Assistant Bachelor's Degree (BA-PA)
  • NCCPA Certification
  • ACLS, BCLS per delineation of privileges.

Required Licenses: Physician Assistant License-NYS

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $151,000-$173,000 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

require a Physician Assistant Bachelor's Degree, a current New York State Physician Assistant License, NCCPA Board Certification, and Basic Life Support Certification from the American Heart Association. Previous experience as a Physician Assistant or completion of a fellowship is preferred, along with at least two years of clinical rotation experience across various specialties.
