About the role

Medical Scribes provide clinical assistance by performing on-site medical transcription and documenting patient encounters. They are also responsible for obtaining patient specimens and performing phlebotomy and point-of-care testing.

The Department of Student Health and Wellness (SHW) seeks to hire Medical Scribes for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Scribes are essential members of our healthcare team and work directly with patients under the supervision of licensed medical staff.

This position is ideal for students pursuing health careers who are taking a gap year between undergraduate and graduate education.

This is a wage position, with an expectation of 40 hours per week during the academic year and an anticipated start date of early August 2026.

Please note that there is an annual 1500-hour limit for this position and all other wage assignments at UVA also count toward the 1500-hour limit.

Medical Scribes provide clinical assistance to SHW staff and faculty by performing on-site medical transcription.

They work directly with patients to obtain patient data and specimens as required by protocols.

They enter data into project and medical record databases and assist with documentation.

They may accompany physicians on patient encounters to record accurate medical information including notes of communication, past medical records, laboratory results, etc.

Specific Responsibilities may include: Scribe for patient visits for a variety of health concerns, including primary care, travel, and dermatology.

Perform phlebotomy and other laboratory services under the direction of the laboratory supervisor.

Obtain patient specimens, including nasal specimens from patients with suspected COVID.

Prepare charts for specified visits, such as travel and dermatology.

Utilize equipment to perform point of care testing Assist in quality improvement projects Assist in public health events, such as mass vaccination events Other duties as assigned This is a wage position which is not eligible for leave or other benefits and is limited to 1500 hours of work in a year.
