The Staff Nurse manages individualized patient care for oncology patients, striving to meet their physical, spiritual, and psychosocial needs to help them reach optimum health potential. Responsibilities include assessing patient and family needs, developing and communicating a realistic plan of care, implementing medical and nursing interventions, and evaluating patient responses.
Candidates must be graduates of an accredited school of nursing with demonstrated proficiency in acute care nursing, including competent clinical assessment skills and the ability to care for multiple patients. Required certifications include BLS and ACLS, with OCN certification required within two years for full-time staff.
Under the general supervision of the Manager of Oncology, staff strives to meet all physical, spiritual, and psychosocial needs of the oncology patients. Manages individualized patient care that focuses on helping the cancer patient reach his/her optimum health potential.
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Demonstrated proficiency in acute care nursing, knowledge, and skills.
Ability to care for multiple patients.
Flexibility in scheduling and in moving within patient care areas.
Competent clinical assessment skills.
Willing to fulfill role as Charge RN.
BLS & ACLS certification required.
Current state license.
Completion of competency skills list
Recommend Chemo/Biotherapy within 3 months in the department.
OCN Certification is required within 2 years with full-time status.
Proficiency in intravenous initiation
Assesses patient and family needs to provide quality care to patients.
Develops, discusses, and communicates a realistic problem list (plan of care) for each patient, in collaboration with each patient/family/significant other in order to address all identified needs.
Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to implement medical plan of care, nursing interventions, and procedures as necessary for the care of the patient.
Evaluates identified problems, care provided, and patient’s responses in order to meet patient and family needs to ensure overall quality of care delivered.
Maintains up to date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to ensure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team, in order to ensure quality care.
Maintains current knowledge/certification/licensure.
Functions as a role model for current and new staff.
Performs all responsibilities/duties required by the Oncology Department as specific to the scope of service to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed.
Attends all required safety training programs and can describe responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job related hazards.
Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intradepartmental to facilitate the departments/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives.
Directs other licensed and non- licensed personnel in the provision of care to patients as assigned.

Appearance is professional, neat, clean, and appropriate for the work environment. Wears proper photo identification badge while on duty.
Maintains confidentiality of all hospital and patient information at all times, as observed by peers and management.
Attends monthly staff meetings and participates in monthly rounding process with manager to assure effective and timely two-way communications.
Participates in and completes required department specific education and training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to department safety and specific job-related hazards.
Follows safety and security policies including exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.

Is knowledgeable of patient rights and ensures an atmosphere which allows for the privacy, dignity and well-being of all patients in a safe, secure environment.
