About the role

The Pathologist Assistant performs comprehensive macroscopic examination of pathology specimens, including dissection and orientation, in preparation for microscopic review by a Pathologist. Essential functions also involve assisting with frozen sections, performing limited neonatal autopsies under supervision, and maintaining familiarity with pathology information systems.

Description

Purpose Performs comprehensive macroscopic examination for Pathology specimens in preparation for Pathologist microscopic examination. Handles specimens that require dissection and orientation and assists in the preparation of frozen sections with the Pathologists during normal working hours. Perform duties under the supervision on the PA Supervisor.

1.Exhibits Competency in all procedures performed

Performs general Pathologist’s Assistant duties with supervision.

Reviews patient history at time of grossing.

Communicates in professional manner with clinicians regarding submitted specimens when necessary.

Gross photographs when needed.

Performs tissue selection for special studies, when needed,

Assist with the processing of frozen section specimens.

Performs limited postmortem examinations (neonatal autopsies only)under supervision of a Pathologist including gross dissection, photography, clinical summary, and preparation of microscopic sections.

Understands how to troubleshoot issues with cryostat between service appointments.

Develops and maintains familiarity with pathology and hospital information systems.

Performs photomicrographs for tumor conference.

Reviews and designated appropriate limb and autopsy tissue to be discarded.

Keeps up to date on policies, procedures, skills, documentation requirements for continuing education, checklists and successful completion of competency surveys in a timely manner.

Follows SOP for specimen collection/labeling/processing/storage/handling/ref lab testing.

2.Participates in the Quality Management of the Laboratory

Provides suggestions and feedback in a timely manner for issues and/or problems.

Maintains strict confidentiality and security of information.

Recognizes, appropriately resolves and documents QA issues in a timely fashion.

Performs/documents quality control testing calibration and limited preventative maintenance as defined by established protocol and takes appropriate remedial action.

3.Productivity and Initiative

Able to complete work assignments in a timely manner

Demonstrates the ability to perform multiple tasks effectively.

Turnaround time meets threshold.

Documents and communicates necessary info to appropriate staff/supervisor/manager/director to assure quality health care.

Maintains a neat and organized work area

Completes required CE

Attendance /Punctuality in accordance with hospital policy.

Follows safety rules and organizational policies in the workplace.

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, state & local laws/regulations, Trinity Health Integrity & Compliance Program & Code of conduct, as well as other policies, procedures & guidelines in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical & professional behavior and safe work practices.

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in health science, Pathologists’ Assistant

Current license from New York State Department of Education as a Pathologist’s Assistant or eligible to obtain.

ASCP certification.

Pay Range

$47.50 - $65.00

Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.

Requirements

Candidates must possess a Master's degree in a health science field, specifically as a Pathologist's Assistant, and hold or be eligible for a New York State Department of Education license. ASCP certification is also a mandatory requirement for this role.
