The specialist will conduct medical evaluations for suspected child abuse and neglect, including taking histories, performing physical exams, obtaining necessary tests, and producing legally acceptable reports with diagnostic findings and treatment recommendations. Responsibilities also include cooperating with other professionals, providing telephone consultations, promoting community awareness through education, and potentially providing expert testimony when subpoenaed.
Candidates must be a graduate of a four-year U.S. Medical School or equivalent, with a minimum of three years of clinical experience evaluating children for abuse concerns, and must possess or be eligible for medical licensure in the applicable state. Board certification in Pediatrics or a Pediatric sub-specialty is required, with Child Abuse board eligibility preferred, mandating certification within five years of eligibility.
Medical evaluations of children for suspected abuse and neglect. Legally acceptable reports of evaluations. Assessments for suspected abuse. Provision of quality services. Telephone consultations to professionals in the community and state on medical aspects of suspected abuse. Promotion of community awareness of child abuse issues through educational programs. Expert testimony when subpoenaed to depositions or trials on cases. Continuing education for child abuse examiners. Provides call coverage for child abuse consultations or examinations as necessary. Outpatient general pediatrics clinic time is potentially available if interest.
Education: Graduate of four-year U.S. Medical School or equivalent. Specialty training in child abuse preferred.
