The cytotechnologist is responsible for preparing, examining, and interpreting gynecological and non-gynecological specimens to detect evidence of cancer or other pathological conditions. They must document findings, maintain accurate laboratory records, and refer abnormal cases to a pathologist for further evaluation.
Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in a health science field or have four years of directly related experience, along with a one-year cytology program completion. A valid Hawaii Cytotechnologist License is required for this position.
Performs variety of duties pertaining to detection of evidence of cancer or other pathological conditions by studying cells.
Receives, identifies, and accesses all gynecological smears and non-gynecological specimens submitted for cytological evaluation. The cytotechnologist is responsible for documenting as outlined by CLIA 88 the slide interpretation results of each gynecologic and nongynecologic cytology case he or she examined or reviewed; for each 24-hour period, the total number of slides examined or reviewed in the laboratory as well as the total number of slides examined or reviewed in any other laboratory or for any other employer; and the number of hours spent examining slides in each 24-hour period. Prepares smears from all non-gynecological specimens, such as urine, sputum, and fluids by any or all of following procedures: centrifugation, filtration, placing desired specimen on glass slides using pipette or applicator stick and immersing slide into fixative or spraying slide with aerosol fixative. Prepares slides for microscopic evaluation by immersing slides into appropriate stains, rinsing, dehydrating and clearing agents, mounting slides with specific mounting agent and placing blank coverslip over specimen slides. Examines all smears for evidence of cancer or other diseased conditions. Classifies slides according to established classifications ranging from negative to positive for malignant cells. Signs-out all normal slides. Refers all abnormal cases to Lead Cytotechnologist for further evaluation or directly to Pathologist or for decision as to whether biopsy or further cytological study is necessary. Compiles listings of patients from whom Pathologist has requested follow-up specimens. Maintains follow-up file on all atypical cases to determine if cell abnormalities have remained same, been eliminated or intensified. Records and compares any surgical findings with cytological findings. Reports findings to Pathologist. Maintains records of all work performed in cytology section. Catalogues and files all slides and report forms to be used as part of patients medical records. Orders and maintains adequate supplies. Prepares reagents and stains. Keeps abreast of new cytological methods, advances and trends through periodicals, meetings and seminars.
Six months of cytology experience. Bachelors degree in Cytology.
