- As a DSP apprentice, you will prepare for a rewarding career in the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) field.
- You will gain knowledge of Indiana’s Medicaid Waiver structure, best practices, service standards, and the effective management of a SIRS program.
- Through shadowing and hands-on experience, you will provide direct support to individuals by implementing person-centered support, wellness, and behavior plans.
- You will also learn to respect and understand the rights of those you support, ensure their safety, recognize individual needs, and promote independence across a variety of service settings.

- Depending on position, this could include assisting individuals with activities including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and transferring while encouraging the individual to perform as much self-care as possible. Understanding and utilizing adaptive equipment including wheelchairs and belts/locks, Hoyer lifts, etc. and be able to securely load and unload clients’. (Note: Not applicable to all positions.)
- Driving individuals to daily appointments, work, day programs, recreation events, and stores as needed.
- Completing medication records and counts.
- Maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment for individual(s). Performing general housekeeping and teaching/supporting individual(s) to perform housekeeping.
- Completes all trainings including new hire, on the job and annual trainings within the designated timeframe.
- Understands and follows proper physical safety and emergency protocols.
- Completes all documentation accurately and timely.
Qualifications
- The minimum age requirement is 18 years.
- Must have High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record and dependable transportation.
- Must pass a drug screen and comprehensive background check.
- Must be eligible to enroll in college courses.
Requirements
- CPR/First Aid - provided.
- There is a physical requirement of:
- Frequent (34%-66% of time). Medium-lifting 80 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to exert sufficient grip to pick up a 12 oz. can of soft drink.
- Work while standing, walking, and in seated position
- Must be able to complete competency testing throughout the apprenticeship.
- Must be able to commit to the full duration of the apprenticeship.
