Performs routine and complex EEG recordings, long-term epilepsy monitoring, and neurotelemetry on adult and pediatric patients across various clinical settings. Acts as a technical liaison between physicians and technologists while maintaining laboratory equipment and ensuring patient safety.
Requires an associate degree or equivalent combination of clinical experience and education. Candidates must be eligible for EEG registration and possess strong critical thinking and judgment skills.
Develops a knowledge and understanding of basic electronics, general anatomy and physiology, neuroanatomy and physiology, clinical neurophysiology, and neurophysiological diagnostic procedures and protocols. Performs Electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings under direct or indirect supervision on adult and pediatric patients. As skill level increases; may perform complex neurophysiology procedures. Acts as a liaison between the electroencephalographer, physicians and senior technologists to coordinate, perform or provide technical assistance during complex and highly technical procedures. As skill level increases; may train new hires. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Performs routine and complex EEGs, long term epilepsy monitoring (LTM), neurotelemetry, and patient safety monitoring in the Neurophysiology Laboratory, inpatient, neonate, and intensive care units, and the operating room. Works under additional direct and/or indirect supervision and following additional quality assurances and controls if still preparing for (ABRET) EEG certification. Works with indirect supervision during a variety of shifts including days, evenings, and overnights. Takes “on-call” on a rotation basis with other technologists. Maintains HSPP certification and able to participate in data collection of patient information for research purposes appropriately. Maintains an orderly and clean laboratory to ensure a safe work environment and the highest quality of patient care. Maintains and calibrates all laboratory medical devices. Takes inventory and orders supplies for his/her area. Demonstrates an understanding of the principles and methodology of neurophysiology procedures, including diagnostic procedures, calibration and maintenance of equipment, and other related activities. With increased skill level, exercises a high degree of skill, judgment, and understanding of the principles and methodology of neurophysiology procedures. Prepares patient appointment scheduling, history, encounter, and billing forms as necessary. Participates in didactic and practical instruction, develops clinical skills, and practice techniques, and learns all Neurophysiology lab operating procedures and protocols. Participates in weekly and annual conferences and technical meetings. Presents topics as appropriate. Maintains R.EEG.T through obtaining CEU's and ACE credits (ASET Journals, attending credit granting lectures, and completing courses) as needed to keep current with the American Board of Registration for Electroneurodiagnostics and Evoked Potential technologist. Trains new hires in EEG after 3 years of EEG experience. Travels to various inpatient (Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital) and outpatient (Westfall Neurology Clinic, East River Pediatric Neurology) locations to perform EEG and EP recordings. Other duties as assigned MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE Associates Degree or equivalent combination of clinical experience and education required Relevant training/education required to meet eligibility for EEG registration. May be on the job training; required KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Requirement to obtain EEG registration within 8 years.
