About the role

The Cytotechnologist is responsible for screening and evaluating gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens to identify abnormal or malignant conditions. They must also ensure accurate documentation, maintain laboratory integrity, and meet slide screening requirements according to standard operating procedures.

Labcorp is seeking a Cytotechnologist to join our team at Henry Ford St John Hospital in Gross Pointe Woods, MI .

Work Schedule

  • Monday -
  • Friday 8am-4:30pm
  • Job Responsibilities
  • Screen and evaluate any gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens sent to the laboratory for the determination of possible malignant or related abnormal conditions
  • May assist with Fine Needle Aspirations
  • Screening of all liquid based cytology, both manual and imaged, as well as conventional slides
  • Perform microscopic evaluation of cytological specimens following laboratory procedures and policies
  • Ensure proper documentation of workload recording, including screening and non-screening activities as required by CLIA and laboratory guidelines
  • Maintain absolute integrity in the accurate performance and reporting of results
  • Meet slide screening requirements as per standard operating procedure
  • Finalize testing results into the computer in an accurate and timely manner
  • Provide backup for cytology processing and other tasks as needed
  • Comply with all safety, infection control and HIPAA policies

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Chemical or Biological science, Cytology Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology
  • Completion of a Cytology program
  • ASCP Cytotechnologist (CT) Certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters’ degree in Cytology
  • 3 months or more of Cytology experience
  • ThinPrep and SurePath certifications
  • Additional Job Standards
  • Able to pass slide screening requirements and annual CAP proficiency test
  • Demonstrated understanding of Cyto preparation techniques
  • Automated and non-automated testing experience
  • Understanding of laboratory operations as well as policies and procedures
  • Experience in a high volume clinical laboratory environment
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems
  • High level of attention to detail along with strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to handle the physical requirements of the position
  • Able to pass a standardized color blindness test
  • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs

Employees regularly scheduled to work less than 20 hours, Casual, Intern, and Temporary employees are only eligible to participate in the 401(k) Plan. Employees who are regularly scheduled to work a 7 on/7 off schedule are eligible to receive all the foregoing benefits except PTO or FTO. Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in a relevant science field and have completed a Cytology program with ASCP Cytotechnologist (CT) certification. Proficiency in laboratory operations, computer systems, and the ability to pass a color blindness test are required.
