You can learn about our benefits here: https://humanresources.baltimorecity.gov/hr-divisions/benefits NOTE: GRANT POSITIONS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR RETIREMENT BENEFITS Job Summary The Baltimore City Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services (MOHS) is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional for the Peer Recovery Specialist position within the Emergency Services Team to provide peer recovery support services to clients with substance use disorders, mental health disorders, and/or co-occurring disorders to begin and maintain a path to recovery. The Peer Recovery Specialist will provide onsite support at MOHS funded shelters and drop-in centers. Work involves weekly site visits and other service referral connections. Employees in this class work weekdays; Monday thru Friday, 8:30am-4:30 pm or flexible shifts as needed. Work requires minimal physical exertion. Work in this position includes no supervisory responsibilities or requirements. This position will report directly to the Operations Officer II (Emergency Services Manager). Essential Functions Lead Resident support groups in the various shelter locations. Provide outreach services on a weekly basis weekly at assigned site locations. Assist clients with symptom management and recovery by modeling wellness, personal responsibility, self-advocacy. Coordinate training with internal and external stakeholders on substance abuse and peer recovery programs. Promote personal growth and development with mental health and substance abuse issues. Assist, teach, and support clients regarding Activities of Daily Living. Assist the Emergency Services Team with crisis management in the various shelter location and support the coordinated entry line during Code Red and Code Purple winter shelter operations. Attend meetings and annual conferences as it relates to peer recovery services.
Education: Have an associate degree in human services or related field from an accredited college or university. AND Experience: Have career experience in social services, supportive housing, or working with homeless persons; and 2 years of HMIS experience, 1 year of paid experience performing community service work, providing information and referral services, or promoting community activities OR Equivalency Notes: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to interact appropriately, professionally, and positively with clients and members of the treatment team. Demonstrated ability to prepare and present ideas and information clearly yet concisely Observational skills to interpret demeanor and spot signs of distress or crisis. Ability to communicate effectively; active listening skills to engage in productive conversations and lead effective group sessions. Organizational skills to maintain complete, accurate records for multiple clients; ability to maintain organized records. Must have computer and documentation skills. Problem-solving skills to help clients overcome obstacles to their continued recovery. Excellent writing skills to produce clear, concise recovery reports; demonstrated ability to prepare and present reports. Thorough knowledge of English usage.
