Description Goodwill Northern Michigan is seeking a Human Service Worker (HSW) to support daily operations at the Goodwill Inn, a 24 x 7 x 365 low-barrier, housing-focused emergency shelter. This role provides direct support to guests while helping maintain a safe, respectful, and dignified environment.
This position pays $20/hr, and there is a $2/hr shift differential for hours worked between 10pm and 6am.
Positions may include day, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts Flexible scheduling required based on shelter operations and coverage needs Part-time opportunities may be available Benefits include: Medical, dental, and vision insurance Free virtual healthcare Paid time off and paid holidays Retirement plan with employer contribution Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Training and professional development opportunities Key Responsibilities: Support day-to-day shelter operations and guest services Welcome, monitor, and assist guests and visitors; manage intake and exits Provide information, referrals, and community resource support Maintain accurate records, including HMIS data entry and daily event logs Ensure guest sign-in accuracy and compliance with shelter expectations Monitor facility safety, cleanliness, and emergency procedures Answer phones, respond to emails, and prepare basic documentation Accept and document community donations, issuing receipts as required Coordinate with partner agencies when emergency lodging is needed due to capacity Respond to medical or safety incidents within certification guidelines and complete required documentation Attend required trainings and staff meetings Qualifications & Expectations: Commitment to Goodwill’s mission and values Ability to work respectfully with individuals experiencing homelessness and diverse populations Strong attention to confidentiality, safety, and professionalism Ability to follow policies, procedures, and emergency protocols Comfortable working in a fast-paced, people-centered environment
High school diploma or GED required; post-secondary education in human services preferred. Experience or knowledge related to homelessness or human services preferred. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills; typing at least 30 wpm. Ability to multitask and manage competing priorities. Physical & Schedule Requirements: Ability to sit, stand, walk (including uneven surfaces), bend, kneel, reach, and perform repetitive movements. Ability to lift 20–30 lbs. regularly, with occasional heavier lifting. Availability for on-call rotation, including 24/7 coverage as needed.
