About the role

The orderly assists the surgical team with preparing surgical suites and providing perioperative, intraoperative, and postoperative patient care. They are also responsible for maintaining equipment, managing supplies, and adhering to strict aseptic techniques.

Job summary

To provide assistance to the surgical team and department by maintaining a knowledge of sterility and its function in the OR Department. Primary duty is to assists surgical team with duties in preparing for the start, middle and end of surgical cases.

Job duties

Communicates effectively with the surgery manager, supervisors and team leader.

Assists surgical team with preparing surgical suites for scheduled cases.

Assist Registered Nurse to provide a continuum of effective nursing care for each patient perioperative, intraoperative and postoperative.

Assist Anesthesia Personnel.

Adheres to Standards of Aseptic Technique.

Assist in tracking, ordering, receiving and disposition of supplies in their assigned area.

Perform technical duties according to Departmental procedures.

Demonstrates cost-conscious use of supplies; maintains equipment in a clean and safe manner.

Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Lifting, Carrying, Pushing, Pulling 50 - 100 Lbs. occasionally, 20 - 50 Lbs. frequently, 10 - 20 Lbs. constantly.

Climbing

Occasionally - Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet, and legs or hands and arms. Body agility is important.

Stooping

Frequently - Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

Kneeling

Frequently - Bending legs at knees to come to rest on knee or knees.

Crouching

Frequently - Bending body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.

Reaching

Frequently - Extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.

Handling

Frequently - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands. Fingers are involved only to the extent that they are an extension of the hand, such as to turn a switch or shift automobile gears.

Talking

Occasionally - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to clients or to the public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

Hearing

Occasionally - Perceiving the nature of sounds by ear.

Near Acuity

Occasionally - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.

Minimum education, knowledge, skills, and abilities required

High School Graduate or GED equivalent required.

CPR certification required.

Basic computer skills.

Experience in direct patient care or surgery areas preferred.

Working conditions

Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, and temperature changes. Most of the time is standing or walking.

Subject to certain distasteful patient care activities and exposure to communicable diseases, and other illness or diseases.

May have exposure to chemical, X-ray, disinfectants and other hazardous products.

Must be willing to stay over and work overtime, work weekends and/or holiday hours if requested.
