Requires an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a science-related field with specific biology and chemistry credits. Certification from ASCP (HT or HTL) is required within 12 to 18 months of hire.
Join Our Team at UPMC as a Histotechnician or Histotechnologist! UPMC is seeking a dedicated Histotechnician or Histotechnologist to join our dynamic Histology Lab team. This full-time position is perfect for someone passionate about contributing to life-changing medicine in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
Shift: Evening shifts 5 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., Monday through Friday.
Understands CoPath related to Histology workflow. Progresses towards working independently in an advanced staining area. Performs QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining Processes and prepares surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embeds and cuts specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols. Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department-specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts, or floaters. Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process. Maintains instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols. Performs additional tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.
American Society Clinical Pathology Histology Technician (HT) certification from ASCP is required within 18 months of hire. Employees active in a Histotechnician position, on or before the effective date 1/1/2004, at a healthcare facility, are grandfathered regarding certification and will not need to obtain it unless they move into a different position that would require certification.
