The chaplain provides spiritual, social, and religious guidance to residents in a retirement community, supporting them through aging, illness, and end-of-life transitions. They collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to facilitate spiritual growth and assist with liturgical services and support groups.
Candidates must hold a degree in a pastoral or social work field or possess equivalent experience. At least one year of chaplaincy experience or one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is required.
Supports Sisters in deepening their spiritual growth. Journeys with Sisters through life's celebrations and challenges. Accompanies Sisters during illness, emotional stress, and times of hospitalization. Supports Sisters in addressing end of life issues with autonomy. Being present with Sisters who are transitioning into eternal life and provide support to their friends, families, and co-workers. Offer support and assistance with services such as Vigils, Funeral Masses and various support groups on campus. Collaborates with DLC Administration and co-workers, DLC interdisciplinary teams, Chapter/Mission Prioresses, and the Liturgical Ministries Department. Pursues opportunities for professional development in gerontology and spiritual care. Ensures all assigned Sisters receive the same high standard of care each shift without showing favoritism or forming excessive attachments to any one Sister. Establishes and maintains professional boundaries with Sisters regarding emotional involvement, personal relationships, gifts, social media, and off-hours contact. Limits personal disclosures to Sisters. When sharing, ensure it is for a therapeutic purpose and not to burden the Sister with the co-worker's own issues. Adheres to the attendance policy. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position to ensure operations continue smoothly and to facilitate teamwork and appropriate resident care. Responds appropriately to safety hazards and/or emergencies following written campus procedures. Complies with all safety policies and procedures by practicing good safety and health habits while performing duties.
Education: Degree in pastoral or social work field or equivalent experience required.
At least one year of chaplain experience or 1 unit of CPE required. Chaplain experience working with the elderly population preferred.
Well developed communication and listening skills. Emotionally and spiritually mature. Able to use a holistic approach to care. Well-grounded in relationship to God and practice of prayer. Able to function under stress and to cope with crisis and grief situations. Experience with, and ability to be present, supportive and compassionate when engaging all Sisters especially those living with dementia and memory loss. Able to multi-task. Ability to function well in a team setting.
Must be able to sit for long periods of time. Be able to move from location to location on campus. Have a valid driver's license and be able to drive when necessary. Must pass third party driving test. Be able to assist Sisters in and out of vehicles and buildings as necessary. Be sighted and able to hear well. Be able to lift as least 45 pounds. Annual influenza vaccination is required for this position.
