About the role

Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures to generate images for medical assessment while ensuring patient comfort and safety. Maintains lab equipment, manages patient records, and collaborates with providers to deliver quality care.

Summary

Performs diagnostic testing using sound waves to generate an image used for the assessment and diagnosis of medical conditions while making patients feel comfortable during the process. The Sonographer uses special equipment to direct non-ionizing, high frequency sound waves into the area of the patient’s body. The Sonographer operates equipment, which collects reflected echoes and forms an image that may be videotaped, transmitted or photographed for interpretation and diagnosis.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Performs ultrasonic diagnostic procedures in accordance with accepted protocols as directed by physicians
  • Instructs patients regarding procedures to ensure cooperation and optimum test results
  • Follows prescribed safety standards in operating equipment
  • Obtains quality diagnostic radiographs as requested by the Provider
  • Maintains ultrasound and vascular lab equipment in appropriate operating condition
  • Utilizes organization’s PACS system to archive studies and generate preliminary reports.
  • Maintains examination rooms and work areas. Orders and stocks all ultrasound and vascular lab supplies
  • Works closely with provider to receive guidance and instruction for treating patients
  • Performs ultrasounds as directed by the Providers
  • Administers pre-authorizations and medical necessity verifications
  • Makes suggestions to improve work methods
  • Trains new employees
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

    • RDMS certification in one or more of the following areas: Abdomen, OB/GYN, vascular, echo. OB/GYN certification must be completed within 6 months of hire.

    The employee must occasionally lift and /or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
