About the role

The Registered Nurse provides direct patient care, including assessments, medication administration, and the implementation of evidence-based nursing interventions. They collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to establish patient goals and oversee support staff to ensure safe and effective treatment.

Summary

The Registered Nurse provides direct care to patients using the nursing process.

This includes ongoing assessment of the total patient.

The RN provides interventions to treat the presenting symptoms and evaluates the effect of nursing interventions and patient's responses.

The RN functions as a team leader/member and resource to others.

The RN delegates, oversees and provides direction to support staff.

Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to establish goals and outcomes for each patient.

The RN is responsible for meeting the needs of all types of patients.

Responsibilities

(40%) Regularly assesses patient's needs and provides skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care and accepted standards of evidence based nursing practice. (30%) Provides direct patient care including medication administration, treatments, education, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as appropriate. (20%) Evaluates effectiveness of treatment plan and makes suggestions or participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care. (10%) The RN is knowledgeable and compliant with all local, state and federal regulations and guidelines as well as hospital specific policies and procedures relating to care provided in the medical center.

Demonstrates a general ability to manage assignments and perform routine duties on the unit. Instructs other team members when appropriate, explaining goals and rationale for individualized care. Documents in an accurate, clear, and concise way and includes pertinent clinical data. Shares information and reports significant changes and/or abnormal findings to appropriate team members in a timely manner. Participates in regulatory surveys. Participates in the performance improvement activities. Assists with orientation and ongoing competencies. Provides a safe and secure environment for patient care. Maintains knowledge with current trends and professional standards within a specialty. Demonstrates understanding of role in emergency preparedness procedures. Assemblies the patient's chart. Completes and documents patient's medical history. Delivers pre-operative and discharge instructions in the manner best suited for the patient and family. Ensures that current history and physical is on the chart, that the plan of care in the history and physical match surgical consent, and the surgical consent is signed by patient. Ensures completion and documentation of necessary lab work, x-rays, and cardiograms for surgical patients and communicates necessary results to the surgeon and anesthesiologist in a timely manner. Completes procedural checklist. Initiates physician orders and completes necessary tasks to ensure that patient is safely prepared for surgery. Participates in direct patient care. Performs other clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with all established policies and procedures within the health system. Practices within the scope of practice as designated by the state of licensure. Delegates appropriate tasks and oversee completion of tasks by other members of the team. Assists anesthesiologist in performing nerve blocks by ensuring proper site marking, completion of safety check list, signing of consent, and maintaining sterile field. All other duties as assigned.
