The Phlebotomist is responsible for accurately collecting blood and other specimens from patients for essential diagnostic laboratory tests. Additionally, they perform clerical duties, manage test transactions, and assist in training new staff and residents.
A high school diploma is required, while certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program and 6 months of experience are preferred. Candidates must obtain various clearances, including FBI and Child Abuse reporting, and CPR certification.
The Phlebotomist has the responsibility and accountability for accurately performing phlebotomy and specimen collection of inpatients and/or outpatients. Samples collected by the phlebotomist are used for laboratory test procedures that are essential in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The Phlebotomist may also perform computer, courier, and clerical functions that are essential to laboratory operations. They also work in conjunction with and under the supervision of the Medical Technologists.
Customer Interaction Interact courteously with customers and respond to inquiries promptly. Specimen Collection Follow patient identification procedures to collect blood and other specimens, including off-site collections. Compliance and Clerical Duties Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies, including safety and quality control. Perform clerical duties, including data entry and managing test transactions. Training and Communication Train new employees, students, and residents. Inform staff of unusual incidents. Additional Responsibilities Perform arterial punctures and maintain supplies cost-effectively.
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program is preferred. Minimum 6 months experience performing phlebotomy is preferred. Medical terminology knowledge and laboratory information system experience preferred.
Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) or equivalent certification preferred.
