Summary
The Medical Assistant assists physicians and other providers by performing administrative and clinical duties under the direction of a physician/provider.
General
Summary of

Monitor and maintain physician’s office schedule, surgery schedule, and scheduling templates; Coordinate scheduling of depositions with physician’s schedule and attorney
Complete administrative duties related to the patient’s care; Facilitate the coordination of appropriate tests, imaging, procedures, lab work, physical therapy, follow up appointments, and referrals per the provider’s request, both within the clinic and with external facilities; Schedule surgeries and required appointments and clearances related to surgery; Send appropriate completed paperwork, test results, consents, and medical records to necessary external facilities; Send appropriate paperwork to patient regarding upcoming appointments/surgeries; Obtain necessary pre-certifications for applicable treatments, procedures, surgeries; Serve as point of contact when coordinating care at external facilities
Properly utilize EMR system and remain up to date on required training and procedures related to EMR system; Demonstrate proficiency in appointment scheduling, order entry, charge entry, and documentation of patient care
Secure patient information and maintain patient confidentiality
Prepare patients for examination; Escort patient to exam room and verify identity; Measure and record vital signs and medical history; Ensure completion of medical history paperwork
Prepare/maintain medical records including order entry and chart prep; Review records prior to examination to ensure all necessary information is present
Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations; Disinfect/clean treatment rooms and general equipment following examinations; Properly dispose of contaminated supplies
Stock exam rooms and supply areas with adequate medical supplies; Assist with ordering/requesting/inventory of supplies when necessary
Assist providers in exam rooms when necessary; Perform/assist with dressing changes, cast removals, cast applications, staple/suture removals, splinting, and bracing
Prepare medications for injections with proper technique and set up for procedure to provider’s preference
Clean and sterilize appropriate instruments according to established protocol

Respond promptly to incoming phone calls from patients, hospitals, physician offices, pharmacies, etc. and provide answers and feedback under direction of the provider; Coordinate prescription refills under provider’s direction
Assist patients with various mobility needs (i.e. restroom, wheelchair, cars, etc.)
Maintain accurate and updated documentation in patient’s chart of any visits, communications, test results, procedures, etc.; Complete accurate and necessary charge/billing information for applicable visits and procedures
Assist in coverage of other staff when necessary; Participate in orientation of employees when needed
Communicate efficiently with other departments to ensure best care for patient
Ensure applicable certifications are up to date, including continuing education requirements
Qualifications

Education and Training
High School diploma or equivalent required at minimum
Experience working in related healthcare position required
Formal Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse training and certification/licensure preferred, or ABR-OE credentials preferred
Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy/physiology required
Physical Demands and Working Conditions/Requirements
Work may require stooping, bending, reaching, and moderate lifting of up to approx. 50 pounds while assisting patients with mobility and positioning, moving supplies, and performing other daily job functions
Requires prolonged periods of sitting at desk and working at computer, as well as prolonged periods of walking and standing
Must have good computer and telephone communication skills and able to operate misc. office equipment
Hearing and vision abilities within normal range, or corrected, to observe and communicate with patients and staff
Ability to work in fast-paced environment in a professional medical office setting

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
• Full time: 40 hours minimum per week; available for overtime as needed; varied day shift hours on week days with occasional coverage required on Saturdays
