The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for preparing, dispensing, and distributing medications under the supervision of a pharmacist. Key duties include filling prescriptions, maintaining inventory, and ensuring the integrity of emergency carts.
Candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent experience and no prior experience is required. New hires must obtain a Tennessee Board of Pharmacy license within 90 days of employment.
Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, performs all functions pertaining to the preparation, dispensing and distribution of all medications.
Fill medication orders and outpatient prescriptions to be verified by pharmacist. Assists the pharmacists with the maintenance of the computerized patient profile system and related transactions. Responsible for maintenance of a 24 hour inpatient medication supply. Responsible for preparation of extemporaneous unit dose medications. Verifies integrity of emergency carts throughout the medical center. Communicates with patient-care areas to facilitate expedient medication delivery. Demonstrates proficiency in aseptic techniques and basic IV preparation support. Performs mathematical calculations for medication volumes and metric measurements. Reconciles IV doses and documents discrepancies. Transmits drug order to wholesaler. Accurately stocks pharmacy inventory and rotates stock to ensure adequate supply. Responsible for monitoring expiration dates on all medications. Maintains inventory adhering to contracted products and formulary items. Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested. Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
Minimum Education: None specified; will accept any combination of formal education and/or prior work experience sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and ability needed to perform the essential tasks of the job, typically such as would be equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. Minimum Experience: None. Licensure Requirement: The Tennessee Board of Pharmacy requires newly hired probationary employees to be licensed by the end of their first 90 days of hire and to maintain their Technician License in active status thereafter.
