About the role

Performs laboratory specimen collection from patients of all ages using various methods to ensure quality diagnostic testing. Responsible for ordering tests in the LIS, preparing samples for shipping, and maintaining a safe, clean laboratory environment.

Position objective

Performs laboratory specimen collection from patients for diagnostic purposes.

Essential job duties

  • 1.
  • Determines and executes the best method for obtaining biological specimens (venipuncture, capillary, heel-stick) from patients of all ages to ensure quality specimens for testing.
  • Follows established productivity guidelines with minimal errors.
  • 2.
  • Orders appropriate tests in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) as requested by authorized providers.
  • Accurately interprets orders, resolves unclear test orders, and ensures timely results and reports.
  • 3.
  • Interacts with patients in a professional and compassionate manner, explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and ensuring comfort during blood collection.
  • 4.
  • Prepares aliquots of samples and shipping batches to move specimens within the hospital and to contracted labs.
  • Registers, draws, and ships client specimens per vendor protocols.
  • 5.
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment by following procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Fosters cooperation to support smooth workflow handoffs.
  • 6.
  • Maintains laboratory supplies inventory and conserves resources by using equipment and materials appropriately.
  • 7.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshoots equipment problems within scope of ability.
  • 8.
  • Practices proper patient identification and ensures complete and accurate registration, including demographics, insurance, date of service, ordering provider, and special flags.
  • 9.
  • Actively participates in the laboratory quality program (e.g., investigative reports, delay notifications) and supports training of new staff and students as a mentor and resource.
  • 10.
  • Adapts quickly to varying workflows and assigned environments.

Educational/Experience requirements

  • Required minimum education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Specialized training in phlebotomy
  • Required minimum experience
  • One year of experience in an outpatient or acute care facility in an equivalent role (preferred)
  • Required licenses/Certifications
  • Phlebotomy certification with the National Phlebotomy Association or American Society of Clinical Pathology (or eligible, preferred)
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (preferred)
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse personalities inside and outside the organization
  • Ability to travel to various sites as needed
  • Flexibility to adjust schedule with minimal notice to meet business needs
