About the role

The Surgical Technologist prepares the operating room and acts as a scrub technologist to assist surgeons during procedures. They are responsible for maintaining sterile fields, managing instrument counts, and ensuring patient safety throughout the surgical process.

Position Summary

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for providing safe, comprehensive, and compassionate care to ambulatory surgical patients in compliance with the facility's philosophy, standards of practice, and governing regulations. This role involves assisting with the preparation, execution, and post-procedure care in the operating room, ensuring patient safety and the efficient operation of the surgical team.

Essential functions

Assist with the preparation of the operating room for surgical procedures, ensuring all necessary equipment and instruments are available.

Act as scrub technologist during surgical procedures, working directly with the surgeon and circulating nurse.

Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments, ensuring patient safety.

Assist with patient positioning, considering body alignment, circulation, and pressure points.

Assist physicians and anesthesia personnel as needed during surgical procedures.

Work with the anesthesia department with stocking and ordering anesthesia supplies as needed.

Participate in the turnover of the OR in a timely manner.

Assist Central Sterile Processing as needed.

Practice and monitor aseptic techniques to prevent infection and contamination.

Participate in the surgical time-out process per facility policy to ensure patient safety.

Review and update physician preference cards as needed with the supervision of the Clinical Manager.

Clean and prepare instruments and equipment after use, returning them to the proper area for storage or processing.

Differentiate sterilization methods required for specific instruments and equipment.

Prepare and monitor high-level disinfectant solutions, ensuring their efficacy.

Assist the Operating Room RN with the handling of specimens according to facility policies and procedures, ensuring proper labeling and care.

Provide a safe environment for patients and personnel, respecting patients' rights to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.

Promote physical comfort and provide emotional support and safety for patients throughout their surgical experience.

Other related functions

Wrap equipment for sterilization and operate autoclaves, Steris, and other sterilization equipment.

Collect data and maintain accurate sterilization logs as required.

Maintain adequate room supplies, assist in stocking, replenishing, and preparing supplies, and notify appropriate staff for ordering.

Maintain a neat and organized environment that promotes safety and efficiency in the operating room.

Attend and participate in staff meetings, in-service programs, and the Quality Council.

Participate in the orientation and training of new Surgical Technicians.

Comply with AHCA, Joint Commission, OSHA, and all regulatory standards.

Assist with housekeeping tasks and recognize the importance of teamwork.

Participate in quarterly inventory.

Complete variance reports as necessary and report any needed repairs or maintenance to the supervisor.

Maintain attendance according to facility guidelines, provide notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness, and request time off per established procedures.

Maintain certification requirements and submit required certifications to facility management.

Strive to be professional, courteous, helpful, and cooperative in all interactions with patients, families, visitors, and team members.

Perform all other duties as assigned.

Education/Training

High School Diploma or GED required

Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program.

Training of sterilization procedures, aseptic techniques, and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment.

Experience

Two (2) plus years of Surgical Technologists experience Multi-Specialty Ambulatory Surgery Center or Outpatient facility, preferred.

One (1) year of Surgical Technologist experience in various specialties, preferred.

Building strong relationships with Physicians.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrates a cooperative work attitude towards co-workers, management, patients, visitors, and physicians.

Ability to set priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Monday through Friday No Weekends No Holidays

Requirements

Candidates must be graduates of an accredited surgical technologist program with a high school diploma and BLS certification. A minimum of two years of experience is preferred, particularly in multi-specialty ambulatory or outpatient settings.
