The Medical Records Clerk is responsible for maintaining patient medical records and ensuring compliance with HIPAA guidelines. Key tasks include scanning documents into charts, processing information release requests, and handling departmental phone calls.
Candidates should have strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently to meet deadlines. While less than high school is the minimum education, a high school diploma and 6-12 months of medical records experience are preferred.
Job Purpose The purpose of the Medical Records Clerk is to maintain patient medical records, following company policies and HIPAA guidelines. Essential Job Functions Check Faxes/emails for medical records and scan into patient charts or forward to correct department or personnel. Releases patient information to requesting parties following established medical records policy and procedures. (Attorneys, Insurance companies, etc.) Scan in a copy of all external requests in patient’s chart. Bill each request according to company policy. Maintain confidentiality of medical records Answer incoming departmental phone calls. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested Qualifications Must possess strong attention to detail. Must be able to work well with co-workers and patients. Must be able to meet deadlines. Must be able to complete assignments with minimal supervision and in a timely manner. Education/Experience Minimum Education: Less than high school Preferred Education: High school or equivalent Preferred experience: 6-12 Month (Medical Records) Working conditions This position works in a medical office setting but has no patient contact. This position also works in close proximity to medical personnel as well as other medical records clerks. Physical requirements This position requires sitting for extended periods of time. It also requires bending and squatting to retrieve medical records, as well as lifting heavy boxes of records. Direct reports This position is not a supervisory position.
