Provide comprehensive nursing care to obstetric patients throughout labor, delivery, recovery, and the immediate postpartum period. Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to monitor fetal wellbeing and manage obstetric emergencies to ensure safe outcomes for mother and newborn.
Requires a graduate degree from an accredited School of Nursing, a DC RN License, and at least 2 years of Labor & Delivery experience. Mandatory certifications include BLS and NRP, with ACLS preferred.
Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for laboring and postpartum patients. Monitor maternal and fetal status using electronic fetal monitoring equipment and recognize changes requiring intervention. Assist physicians and midwives during labor, vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections, and obstetric emergencies. Administer medications, IV therapy, blood products, and treatments in accordance with physician orders and hospital policy. Provide patient and family education regarding labor progression, pain management, breastfeeding, newborn care, and postpartum recovery. Support patients through labor with emotional support, coaching, and advocacy. Collaborate with neonatal and interdisciplinary care teams to coordinate patient care and ensure positive outcomes. Respond effectively to obstetric emergencies including hemorrhage, fetal distress, preeclampsia, and emergency cesarean deliveries. Accurately document patient assessments, interventions, outcomes, and education in the electronic medical record. Maintain compliance with infection prevention, patient safety, and regulatory standards. Participate in unit-based quality improvement initiatives, staff meetings, and continuing education activities.
