The Physical Therapy Assistant supports the Physical Therapist in delivering patient-centered rehabilitation services and ensures proper documentation and communication. They also assist in patient care, equipment operation, and discharge planning.
Candidates must have completed an accredited program and hold a current license as a Physical Therapy Assistant. Preferred qualifications include experience in long-term care and working with geriatric populations.
As part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver patient-centered physical rehabilitation services to patients, supports Physical Therapist in treatment procedures. Physical Therapy Assistants (PTA) are required to have supervision from a Physical Therapist to deliver services. PTAs communicates thoroughly and regularly with Physical Therapists to ensure delivery of plan of care. Completes all required documentation as per state/federal and facility guidelines. Demonstrate team approach to problem solving through frequent communication and collaboration on complex issues to provide appropriate care. Ensures operation of equipment by using equipment consistent with equipment specifications; completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; and calling for repairs. Participates and represents Harborage and PT staff on committees, as requested by supervisors. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge in assessing the need for durable medical equipment for patients. Follows through with appropriate professionals to ensure proper fitting and educates patient on proper usage. Maintains professional competence and keeps current with Physical Therapy trends through participation in continuing education, in-service programs, and professional staff sessions. Complies with federal, state, and local legal and professional requirements. Fosters good relationships and communications with all Team Members, physicians, patients, family/significant others and visitors. Assists with new Team Member (TM) orientation and provide key experiences to prepare TM for independent performance of essential job functions. Problems are reported to designated Supervisor promptly. Complies with federal, state, and local legal and professional requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions. Instructs, encourages, and assists patients to carry out plan of care, specific to patient`s needs and goals established by the supervising Physical Therapist(s). Models and maintains safe environment to deliver services for patient, self, and healthcare team. Employs correct body mechanics during all activities. Demonstrates and implements evidence-based treatment techniques and skills with patients. Maintains professional competence and keeps current with Physical Therapy trends. Continuously monitors patient`s response to treatment and adjusts treatment accordingly in consultation with Physical Therapist. Identifies and reports any real or potential problems regarding the development or admin of patient care. Assists with discharge planning by collaborating with physicians, nurses, social workers, supervising physical therapist(s), and other healthcare providers. Contributes to patient care conferences. Completes all documentation accurately and in a timely manner, consistent with all state regulations.
