The Psychiatric Nurse Clinician manages medication administration and conducts psychiatric group therapy and pre-assessments for patients with co-occurring disorders. They collaborate with psychiatrists and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate care and intervene in crisis situations.
Candidates must be a Registered Nurse licensed in Pennsylvania with at least two years of nursing experience. A BSN and two years of specific psychiatric nursing experience are preferred, along with BLS or CPR certification.
Completes medication administration safely and accurately, including transcription, administration and documentation according to established policies. Participates with unit management in Program Development and Performance Improvement Activities. Participates in interdisciplinary activities including treatment team, staff meeting and other committees as assigned. Conducts psychiatric group therapy and psychiatric pre-assessments. Schedules psych evaluations and follow up appointments according to ASAM standards and psychiatrist orders. Liaison between GRC and hospital in the event a patient is psychiatrically hospitalized and is able to return to GRC. Obtains preauthorization if needed for the Co-Occurring patients. Assists the Psychiatrist in ensuring that patients are ready for their scheduled psych appointment. Intervenes in crisis and other emergency situations Collaboration of care with psychiatrist and participate in treatment team meetings Coordinates with all GRC departments as appropriate. Successful completion of the central and unit specific orientation programs. Attends GRC mandatory in-services and trainings. Attends all nursing trainings, coaching sessions and system-wide competencies Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor. Knowledge Skills and Abilities Maintains current knowledge of medication policies and practices, including side effects, dosage and patient response. Demonstrates a working knowledge of DSM IV diagnosis as evidenced by individual, group and milieu therapeutic interventions. Manages crisis situations effectively using positive approaches. Strong organization and communication skills. Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft products including email Ability to multitask, prioritize and demonstrate flexibility within job assignments.
Two years of recent nursing experience. Graduation from an approved School of Nursing BSN preferred or RN with relevant experience. Two years of Psychiatric nursing preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Registered Nurse in PA with active no restriction license. Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located (PA) or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Additional Requirements Pass a PA Criminal Background Check. Obtain PA Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprinting clearances. Pass Drug Screen. 2-Step TB Test. Work Conditions Significant mental demands to remain organized despite interruptions and multiple requests. The applicant must be physically capable of providing direct physical care including medication administration, to unpredictable, potentially violent, co-occurring patients as necessary, including lifting, supporting, running towards or away from areas where problems are occurring, and pushing and pulling equipment, such as, wheelchairs and beds.
