Process and prepare specialized surgical and autopsy tissue samples for embedding, cutting, and staining. Monitor work quality, maintain laboratory instruments, and resolve problems impacting test results.
Requires a bachelor's degree with specific biology and chemistry credits and HTL (ASCP) certification within 12 months of hire. A New York state license for clinical laboratory technologists or histotechnologists is required.
Process and prepare specialized tissue samples per competency guidelines for this level in a clinical laboratory. In addition, monitor level and quality of work performed by others. Evaluate new procedures, techniques and tools. Resolve problems that impact test results.
Demonstrates progression of skills towards working independently in an advanced staining area. Supports academic mission of department. Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow. Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols. Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies. Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process. Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and cover slipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols. Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.
Successful completion of bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry. One year of clinical histology laboratory experience post training if not a graduate of accredited training program required.
American Society for Clinical Pathology American Society Clinical Pathology Histotechnologist- HTL (ASCP) certification required within 12 months of hire. New York License required for NY locations. Clinical Laboratory Technologist OR Histotechnologist NYS Staff Exclusion List (NYSEL)
