The Phlebotomist is responsible for obtaining and preparing blood and non-blood specimens for laboratory analysis. They perform screening tests, report results, and coordinate with medical staff to resolve ambiguous test orders.
Requires a high school diploma and certifications in CPR and CPI. Phlebotomy certification is preferred, and candidates must pass criminal and sexual offender registry checks.
Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing. Performs screening tests and reports results. Processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing. Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing. Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory. Refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens. Makes the supervisor aware of unresolved orders. Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs. Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training. Maintains compliance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures, and safety practices. Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies. QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or the equivalent. Previous experience or education in a health-related field helpful. Phlebotomy certification preferred, but not required. Carry no history of malpractice or board sanctions. Must pass Criminal Record Check and Sexual Offender Registry Check. Ability to work independently regarding scheduling time, organizing workload, completing a variety of task in a timely manner, and functioning with professionals from other disciplines in a cooperative and helpful manner. Willingness to work flexible hours as needed to support clinic needs. JOB REQUIREMENTS / EXPECTATIONS: Must satisfactorily complete the on-the-job training provided by the Phlebotomy/Accession Lab Supervisor during a probationary period unless extension is granted by the laboratory manager. Knowledge of medical terminology and certification for CPR & CPI required. Excellent communication skills and ability to work under supervision and as part of a team.
