The Nurse Practitioner provides comprehensive care in both clinic and surgical settings, assisting surgeons with upper extremity procedures and managing post-operative care. Responsibilities include performing initial evaluations, ordering tests, and developing treatment plans under physician supervision.
Candidates must hold a Master of Science in Nursing and an active Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner license in the State of Illinois. Current CPR certification is required, and experience in upper extremity care is preferred.
Summary The person in this position functions in the Clinic and/or OR setting under the supervision of his/her assigned physician; may perform activities which involve an initial evaluation and treatment of the patient’s condition, as defined in the scope of the State of Illinois standards.
We are seeking a full-time Nurse Practitioner to join our team in a collaborative role alongside a board-certified surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity care. Experience in the upper extremity is preferred.
Hospital/Surgical Activities Secures patients’ history and physical and records same in medical record. Assists surgeon with daily rounds and records such as progress notes. Ensures the delivery of required patient x-rays to the operating room prior to operative procedure. Assists the surgeon with major and minor surgical procedures in the operating room. Positions, preps and drapes the patient, as needed. Closes surgical wounds and performs post-operative wound care, removal of K-wires, etc. Transmits supervising surgeon’s orders and ensures co-signature by surgeon. Inserts foley catheters, prn. Applies dressings, casts, splint brace, abduction pillows, etc. Participates in on-call activities with assigned physician according to the Medical Center policy on allied health. Performs minor surgical procedures within scope of licensure. Performs and/or assists with patient traction, adjustment, realignment and removal of traction. Dictates H&P’s, consultations and discharge summaries. Clinic Activities Performs joint aspirations/injections. Interprets x-rays. Applies casts, splints, braces, etc. under supervision of the physician. Secures histories and physicals. Updates status of patients scheduled for recheck visits. Removes staples, sutures, drains, etc. Sees patients in the clinic both independently and with supervision. Dictates clinic progress notes. Orders appropriate tests and develops patient treatment plans with physician approval. Other Functions Performs clinical research, presentations, and other academic activities, as needed with physician. Assists in fielding/triaging physician calls.
Physical Requirements/Environment Occasional exposure to electrical and chemical hazards Requires lifting associated with patient transfers (up to 50 lbs.) Requires the ability to bend and stoop without difficulty Involves exposure to blood-borne pathogens Requires verbal/written communication ability in the English language Involves exposure to weather elements and travel to all assoc. Hospitals and/or HOA facilities. Educational/Training Requirements Master of Science in Nursing, Nurse Practitioner Program. Active Licensure as Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner in the State of Illinois. ACLS desirable; current CPR required. History of exhibited competence, judgment, and professional integrity. Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills. Base salary offers for this position may vary based on factors such as location, skills and relevant experience.
