Position Summary
The Consult-Liaison Psychiatrist, Adult delivers high quality and timely psychiatric care to patients within the hospital setting, including MultiCare Health System Emergency Department(s) and hospital unit(s) as needed, in compliance with all practice/agency standards, regulations, contracts and laws.Responsibilities In the Hospital Setting (Inpatient Units): 1. Conduct psychiatric evaluations for medically ill inpatients referred for mental health concerns (e.g., depression, anxiety, psychosis, delirium). 2. Diagnose and manage delirium, including hypoactive and hyperactive types. 3. Assess capacity for medical decision-making and determine whether patients can consent to or refuse treatment. 4. Evaluate and manage suicide risk and other safety concerns in hospitalized patients. 5. Provide psychiatric input on complex cases, including those with comorbid substance use, somatoform disorders, or functional neurological disorders. 6. Support treatment adherence by addressing psychiatric or behavioral barriers. 7. Recommend and initiate psychotropic medications in medically ill patients, considering interactions and medical comorbidities. 8. Collaborate with primary teams (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, oncology) to develop integrated care plans. 9. Facilitate psychiatric transfer when appropriate or advise on outpatient follow-up care. 10. Educate hospital staff on psychiatric issues, including delirium prevention and management, de-escalation techniques, and mental status changes. In the Emergency Department setting: 1. Perform emergency psychiatric evaluations for patients presenting with acute mental health crises. 2. Assess and manage acute agitation, including use of de-escalation techniques and medications. 3. Evaluate suicidal and homicidal ideation and determine level of care needed (e.g., inpatient admission vs. discharge with follow-up). 4. Differentiate medical vs. psychiatric causes of altered mental status (e.g., delirium vs. psychosis). 5. Coordinate with emergency medicine providers for triage and stabilization of psychiatric emergencies. 6. Arrange for psychiatric hospitalization or outpatient follow-up depending on clinical needs and resources. 7. Support staff and family members during mental health crises or complex behavioral presentations. 8. Identify and manage substance intoxication or withdrawal, often in collaboration with medical teams. 9. Document legal determinations, such as involuntary holds or court-mandated assessments, as per local laws. 10. Promote trauma-informed care practices within the ED for patients with psychiatric disorders.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited medical school and residency program
- Licensure to practice medicine in Washington State as a Physician
- Board certification in psychiatry required
- Board certification in consult-liaison psychiatry sub-specialty preferred
- Experience in hospital based psychiatric practice required

Pay and Benefit Expectations We provide a comprehensive benefits package, including competitive salary, medical, dental and retirement benefits and paid time off. As required by various pay transparency laws, we share a competitive range of compensation for candidates hired into each position. The pay scale is $329,600.00 - $376,800.00 USD. However, pay is influenced by factors specific to applicants, including but not limited to: skill set, level of experience, and certification(s) and/or education. If this position is associated with a union contract, pay will be reflective of the appropriate step on the pay scale to which the applicant’s years of experience align.
