The role involves providing advanced surgical assistance, including tissue dissection, suturing, and vessel harvesting during various operations. Responsibilities also include assisting with cardiopulmonary bypass placement and providing call coverage on evenings and weekends.
Candidates must be graduates of accredited surgical technician and surgical first assistant programs with a valid certification and BLS through the AHA. A minimum of one year of experience as a surgical first assistant is required.
Summary: The Surgical Services Department at UofL Hospital consists of the following two areas: Main Hospital and Outpatient Surgery Center. Surgical Services is open 24 hours a day and 365 days a year to ensure all surgeries, including trauma/emergencies, are completed and the community’s health needs are met. Our service lines include Robotics, General, Colorectal, Urology, Cancer, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, Plastics, and Oral Maxillofacial. In total, we have 17 operating rooms with 2 Robotic rooms and 1 Trauma OR. Our staff take pride in offering excellent care to our patients, as well as their families.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Dissect tissue to open the chest (if privileges allow) Harvest native vessel(s) used for bypass or other conduit (endoscopic vein harvest preferred) Dissect vessel branches Suture and close tissue Suction primary and peripheral surgical sites Assist with placement of sutures, needle drives, etc. during sections of the operation involving multiple simultaneous suture lines Verify the identity of patient or operative site Assist with placement of catheters for temporary cardiopulmonary bypass Assist with temporary positioning of the heart, lungs, etc. to create surgery working space Suture tissue to close the chest (if privileges allow) Other surgical assistance as required by the surgeon Evening and/or weekend call coverage Other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited surgical technician vocational or technical program/school. Graduation from a surgical first assistant program. Surgical First Assistant certification. Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA). Minimum of 1 year surgical first assistant experience.
3-5 years of surgical scrub technician experience.
