Job description
Under supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, the pathology support tech ensures proper preparation, handling, labeling, and transport of specimens, maintains equipment and inventory; and assists Pathologists with diagnostic procedures such as frozen sections. Upholds accuracy, safety, and compliance with medical, ethical, and legal standards.
Specimen Handling and Accessioning: Receives, documents, and labels pathology specimens. Assists in specimen preparation for analysis, including fixation and staining. Ensures proper storage and transport per protocols.
Computer Skills: Demonstrates proficiency in the use of HIS and LIS software systems in all job-related functions.
Technical & Laboratory Support: Prepare solutions, stains, and reagents for rapid diagnoses. Slide staining (Touch/squash preps and Diff Quick) for Pathologists. Assist Pathologist with Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) and frozen section procedures. Preparation of grossing area for Pathologists.
Equipment Operation: Operates, maintains and troubleshoots all technical equipment according to approved standard operating procedures.
Quality Control: Follows quality control policies, documents all related activities, and maintains records of instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance.
Inventory Management: Manage inventory by rotating stock and checking supply expiration dates to ensure availability and compliance.
Training: Assists with training of team members and students.
Safety: Demonstrates knowledge and practice of all Atlantic Health and department safety procedures.
Detail-oriented: Maintains accuracy in daily tasks.
Organized: Manages workload efficiently and in a timely manner.
Effective communicator: Communicates clearly with Practitioners, Clinicians, Pathologists, patients, Team Members, and other departments.
