The Surgical Technician First Assistant supports surgeons during operative procedures by retracting tissue, controlling bleeding, and assisting with closures. They are responsible for maintaining a sterile field and ensuring optimal patient positioning and safety throughout the surgery.
Candidates must be a graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program and hold TS-C or CST certification along with BLS certification. A Medical Technician License from the State of New Hampshire is required, and two years of experience is preferred.

The Elliot 1 Day Surgery Center Operating Room is one of the largest most active OR departments in the state located at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester, New Hampshire. It's designed to provide minimally invasive surgical procedures with the highest level of quality care and patient satisfaction. The center also offers pre-surgical testing, post-operative care, and education to ensure a smooth transition back to normal activities. About the Job: Functions under the supervision of the surgeon during a surgical procedure and carries out functions that will assist the surgeon with optimal results for the patient. What You’ll Do: Assists in moving and positioning patients for surgery. Assists the surgeon in draping of the patient. Retracts tissue and exposes the operating field area during the operative procedure. Clamps and ties vessels to control bleeding during surgical entry. Keeps the operative site dry. Affords the surgeon the best possible exposure of the anatomy incident to the operation. Assists the surgeon in identifying any structure which should not be ligated and keeps these structures from the moves of the surgeon. Assists in closures of the incision including tying off bleeders, applying sutures and wound dressing and performs any and all tasks required of them by the surgeon incident to the particular procedures. Practices correct operating room etiquette. Evaluates and implements the plan of care. Complies with all relevant statutes, regulations and institutional policies pertaining to the role of the first assistant. Applies principles of asepsis and infection control knowledgeably and skillfully. Recognizes potential emergency situations or surgical hazards and initiate preventative or corrective measures in a timely manner. Performs proficiently and calmly in all emergencies. Works effectively and in harmony as part of the operative team. Recognizes changes in the patient’s condition. Who You Are: Two (2) years as Certified Surgical Technician preferred. Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist or surgical technician assist program. Tech in Surgery (TS-C) or Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) required. Current BLS certification required. Medical Technician License from the State of New Hampshire required unless other NH state license is held. Knowledge and skills acquired through surgical tech education and certification. Ability to follow complex instructions. Ability to work in a high stress environment. Ability to multitask and respond to procedural emergencies as appropriate.
