About the role

Independently performs and evaluates various laboratory tests on patient specimens to provide data for disease diagnosis and treatment. Responsibilities include maintaining equipment, recording quality control measures, and coordinating with medical staff.

Description ROLE OVERVIEW Independently performs and evaluates various laboratory tests on patient specimens providing data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease utilizing established methods and procedures. Technical services include chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, serology, blood bank, coagulation, therapeutic drug monitoring, phlebotomy, and microbiology. Frequent contact is made with physicians, nurses, patients, other hospital personnel, laboratory staff, and hospital visitors.

Minimum Qualifications

· Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related field, minimum of 6 years experience in acute care or hospital laboratory. Rural hospital experience a plus, but not required. · Technical Skills: Ability to pay attention to detail. Ability and willingness to update Medical Technology skills. Ability to work independently. Ability to work under stressful conditions. Must take call and respond promptly to emergency situations when on call and on shift (Call Back - within 30 minutes of notification or sooner). Technical and analytical knowledge and ability to perform and evaluate laboratory testing in the areas of chemistry, hematology, blood bank, urinalysis, serology, coagulation, and therapeutic drug monitoring. Basic phlebotomy skills are also necessary. Beginner to Intermediate proficiency in the use of computer programs including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Electronic Health Records, Electronic Medical Records, other clinical database systems and the ability to navigate internet based programs for work use. Must be able to read, write and speak the English language in an understandable manner. Must be able to work beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays as scheduled. Possess patience, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm to deal tactfully with personnel, patients, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public. Works harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel. Must possess the ability to interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care. · Other qualifications/certificate/license: Certified by HEW, ASCP/ NCA, and obtain Licensure by State of Nevada as Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Medical Technologist, and General Supervisor Licensure required Must have valid and unexpired driver’s license. Reliable transportation required. Satisfactory personal and/or professional references. Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification

  • Assists with other clerical duties as necessary, which may include answering the phone or writing and reviewing Laboratory test procedures.
  • In addition to the responsibilities described above, the role may include other responsibilities and duties as assigned on occasion, based upon Pershing General Hospital’s needs or requirements.

· Supervisory Responsibilities

  • May be required to direct Laboratory staff on shift in absence of Manager to maintain efficient flow of services for the department. ·
  • Other: All positions at Pershing General Hospital and Nursing Home are safety sensitive positions due to the contact with patients and the nature of the healthcare business. · Will be required to cover call, work holidays and other shifts as required. Flexibility and ability to adjust to changing environments, shifts and duties is required. Regular shifts are not guaranteed – flexibility for scheduling is required. · Must respond to Call Back requests within 30 minutes of notification. · Will be required to travel to local Sheriff’s Department for required testing and out of town for educational purposes.

Minimum Qualifications

· Education/Experience: High School Graduate or GED · Must successfully complete an approved phlebotomy course or six (6) months experience of on the job training as a phlebotomist. Knowledge of Medical Terminology preferred. State of Nevada Lab Assistant License. AHA CPR/BLS preferred. · Technical Skills: Ability to learn and follow established policies, procedures and schedules Ability to follow verbal and written instructions Ability to maintain accurate records and attention to detail Ability to perform phlebotomy and drug screen collection procedures and detect variables in procedures that may cause problems or errors. Ability to work under stressful conditions Must use tact and be professional with patients, visitors and employees at all times · Other qualifications/certificate/license: Apply and obtain licensure by the State of Nevada as a Laboratory Assistant within six (6) months of employment. · Behavioral Competencies: Support Pershing General Hospital and Nursing Home’s vision and mission. Maintain confidentiality of all work information. Demonstrate an ability to function successfully in a team environment. Exhibit courteous, compassionate and respectful treatment of internal and external customers. Displays a positive attitude and flexibility in changing situations.
