Practice for this role

About the role

The student will provide birth assistance and clinic support under the supervision of a licensed midwife. Responsibilities include managing phone communications, portal messages, and providing care to low-risk families.

Qualifications

A minimum of 10 births as PUS are completed, ideally #12 is completed Preceptors and Student Coordinator are willing to sign off that the student is ready to move to this new level. This usually includes the midwives wanting to see the student move towards the emergency not away from it or freezing until given direct instructions. Student has been working as a PUS with NBWC for a minimum of 3 months. The Student Coordinator will meet with the Clinical Director and the student to make a plan for a new schedule. The student will be allowed to take up to 3 birth assist shifts while on call as the Clinic Student in a 4 week period. The rest of the birth assist shifts need to be taken separately from scheduled student shifts. The student will need to continue to fulfill all scheduled 48 hour shifts as a student. If birth assisting gets in the way of finishing school or student responsibilities then BA shifts will be decreased at the discretion of the Student Supervisor. This change may require some shifting for student pairs as midwives will need a strong team to support the student starting in the FP. Payment for the student as a birth assist is paid $5/hr for being on call but not called into an active assist role. From the phone call to attend a birth the student midwife will clock “working hours” and be paid $18/hr for that time. Pay for work will moved to a salaried position in Phase 2. The student will also have clinic/clinic assist shifts; all hours with a licensed midwife supervising. The licensed midwife will start and end all appointments with her supervisor checking in with both her and the client to help her feel safe to provide well rounded care to low risk families. The supervisor will be there to answer difficult questions or circle around for things that are unusual. These hours are paid hourly at a rate of $18/hour.

Expectations

The student will be paid for this shift, and not given a PUS signature unless she is the only PUS student at the birth and she arrived at the same time as the preceptor. In this case, the midwife can choose to give her a signature for skills/birth as PUS in addition to payment. The primary midwife will sign the student off as an assist at the birth on student paperwork. If the primary midwife feels like she acted as a primary under supervision it is in her discretion to sign to that level but the expectation should be that the experience will be signed as an assist. The student will be second in line to help with the phone on grasshopper, can help with simple portal messages and other tasks as requested by the primary midwife.

Requirements

Candidates must have completed a minimum of 10 births as a PUS and worked with NBWC for at least 3 months. Approval from preceptors and the Student Coordinator is required to move into this phase.
