Responsible for passing surgical instruments and maintaining a strict sterile field during procedures.
Obtains, checks, and sets up necessary supplies and instruments for each case.
Anticipates surgical team needs and assists with surgical case counts in accordance with policy.
Monitors for and addresses breaks in sterile technique to ensure patient safety.
Collaborates with team members to deliver efficient, safe, and intraoperative and postoperative care.
Essential functions
Demonstrates scrub competency and adheres to aseptic technique for all age groups.
Prepares, drapes, and assists in positioning patients and operative areas.
Assists surgeons during procedures, anticipating needs and ensuring efficiency.
Performs sponge, sharps, and instrument counts according to policy.
Manages and cares for surgical specimens, cultures, and medications in the sterile field.
Reviews and obtains necessary supplies, sets up and restocks operating rooms, and assists with turnover between procedures.
Maintains a clean, safe, and infection-controlled environment, following all safety and regulatory guidelines.
Assists with orientation and instruction of new personnel and participates in quality improvement activities.
Documents and communicates relevant patient information, collaborating with the RN and surgical team.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education requirement: High school diploma or equivalent and vocational/technical training in a designated technical area
Experience requirement: 0–2 years of experience in a healthcare, clinical setting, or a relevant area
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
All experience must be paid and in the same related field.
Part-time and PRN experience will be prorated based on hours worked per week.
Volunteer work and internships for academic credit are not counted.
Certifications & licensures
Current and active Registered Nurse (RN) license, Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or Tech in Surgery - Certified (Surgery TS-C) through the National Center for Competency Testing, Basic Life Support (BLS)
