The Lab Assistant is responsible for collecting, processing, and preparing medical specimens to assist physicians in diagnosing diseases. Duties include maintaining laboratory equipment, managing sample logs, and handling departmental communications.
Candidates must have a high school diploma and obtain a Point of Care Technician license within 30 days of hire. A degree in Biology or Biochemistry and previous laboratory or medical assistant experience are preferred.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. High School Diploma or Equivalent. 2. Point of Care Technician license through the West Virginia DHHR within 30 days of hire.

One (1) year of laboratory experience CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. Receive, identify and prepare all samples and request forms entering the department. 2. Identify, prepare and dispatch all samples to correct lab departments maintaining an accurate log, uses pending logs and the specimen tracker system. 3. Prepare, store and retrieve when necessary frozen aliquots, 24 hr urine aliquots, microbiology and routine blood samples. 4. Alert the appropriate departments on receipt of urgent samples, frozen samples and samples requiring special handling. 5. Use the laboratory computer systems, including confident use of the test/client libraries, hospital intranet and referral database during data entry. 6. Scan, file and archive request forms and other hard copy data. 7. Maintain a good operating knowledge of any analyzers or equipment required for performing tasks in the laboratory. 8. Handle queries relating to samples and requests in a timely and professional manner. 9. Receive and handle incoming calls to the department. 10. Perform tasks in a careful and efficient way, in compliance with current CAP standards, regulatory requirements and the Quality Management System. 11. Make minor repairs and simple adjustments to designated laboratory equipment. 12. Clean laboratory equipment glassware and maintains a clean lab area.
