Provides direct patient care and operates hyperbaric chambers for various age groups according to established protocols. Responsible for preparing patients, monitoring environment variables, and maintaining equipment to ensure safe oxygen therapy.
Requires a current certification or license as a Medical Assistant, EMT, Paramedic, Diver Medical Tech, or LPN, along with BLS certification. Completion of a UHMS approved course in Hyperbaric Medicine is required within one year of hire.
This position provides direct patient care before, during, and after hyperbaric treatments. This position will perform varied tasks and procedures as instructed by a licensed professional to assist with hyperbaric patient needs. Under the direction and delegation of a licensed professional, assists the patient care team to ensure safe and quality care is given. Operates the hyperbaric chamber according to the level of training and established protocols for the following age groups: neonatal, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric. Fosters a safe environment by complying with the safety policy, taking appropriate action in an emergency, and removing any potentially hazardous materials/equipment from the hyperbaric chamber before the chamber is pressurized. Performs routine cleaning of the hyperbaric chamber and ancillary equipment to prevent the transmission of infection. Performs maintenance to the level of training and departmental policy Prepares patients to receive hyperbaric oxygen therapy so that physical and patient-related risk factors are eliminated or controlled before and during the patient's treatment Sets up and operates all ancillary equipment relating to hyperbaric oxygen therapy, including, but not limited to, blood glucose testing and blood pressure monitoring. Multiplace specific: Calculates nitrogen time, oxygen breathing obligations, required decompression stops, and repetitive dive profiles as needed. Is able to work in a compressed gas environment. Monitors in chamber environment variables such as temperature, oxygen and maintains communication with inside attendant including tasks such as pressurization, ventilation, times, air breaks, and chamber movement. Employees are expected to complete a UHMS approved course in Hyperbaric Medicine within one year of their hire/transfer into this job. Skills Patient Services Patient Safety Patient Satisfaction Taking Initiative Quality Improvement Shift details: PRN/On-call, 0 guaranteed hours. The hours for the position are 0700-1700 with occasional after-hours on call shifts on nights and weekends. PRN staff typically work 1-2 regular shifts and 1 on call shift each pay period. Required Qualifications Current certificate or license in Medical Assistant, Diver Medical Tech, Emergency Medical Technician certification, Paramedic certification, or LPN license Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers. Meets medical requirements for hyperbaric exposure if applicable.
Completion of a UHMS or ACHM approved course in Hyperbaric Medicine. One year of wound care or hyperbaric experience. Experience in an acute hospital setting. Physical Requirements Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies. Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc. Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items. Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.) May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
