LABOR & DELIVERY: West Penn’s Obstetrics Department consists of 15 Labor & Delivery beds, 6 Triage Rooms, 3 C-Section Operating Rooms, 4 PACU beds, and a 20-bed antepartum unit, with nurses cross-trained to work in all areas. GENERAL OVERVIEW: This job is responsible for providing direct care to newborns immediately following birth. Responsibilities will include attending births, conducting comprehensive assessments, stabilizing newborns, and facilitating a seamless transition to postnatal care. Collaborate closely with obstetricians, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal outcomes for both mother and baby. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES Attendance at Births: Providing immediate neonatal care during and immediately after delivery, responding promptly to emergent situations. (15%) Initial Assessment & Stabilization: Performing APGAR scoring, evaluating vital signs, and administering necessary interventions (suctioning, warming, stimulation, oxygen, resuscitation). (15%) Documentation & Communication: Accurately documenting all assessments, interventions, and observations; communicating effectively with the delivery team and neonatal provider. (10%) Admission Procedures: Obtaining vital signs, weight, length, and head circumference; facilitating skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding initiation; administering routine medications and vaccinations. (10%) Family Education & Support: Educating parents on immediate newborn care and breastfeeding; providing emotional support during the birthing process. (10%) Collaboration & Teamwork: Coordinating with the labor and delivery team, neonatal providers, and postnatal units; participating in debriefings and case reviews. (10%) Compliance & Standards: Adhering to hospital policies, protocols, and evidence-based practices; maintaining NRP certification. (10%) Responsible for conducting postpartum follow-up phone calls to address patient concerns, provide education, and monitor progress, documenting all interactions in the electronic health record. (10%) Provides maternal-child patient rounding, focusing on early detection of potential complications and ensuring timely intervention. (10%) Other duties as assigned or requested.
