Provide direct clinical and consultative public health nursing services focusing on disease prevention, early detection, and family-centered care. Perform immunizations, HIV testing, and health education while collaborating with other professionals to implement nursing care plans.
Must be licensed as a registered professional nurse in the State of Michigan. A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is preferred, along with the ability to pass a medical examination and complete a probationary period.
Summary Location: Pontiac MI and surrounding areas (North Oakland County) Compensation: $62,867 - $79,323 Under general supervision, the Public Health Nurse provides direct clinical and consultative professional public health nursing services to County residents. Provides services for family centered care emphasizing disease prevention, early detection, and referrals. Gives immunizations, provides sexually transmitted disease diagnosis and treatment under the direction of the Medical Standing Orders. Provides HIV counseling and testing services, provides a broad range of counseling and instructional services. Assesses and evaluates client needs, provides consultation and public health nursing services. Nursing services for this position are provided in Health Division Clinics with occasional outreach opportunities. Exercises a considerable degree of independent judgment in planning for and implementing public health nursing services in assigned area collaborating with other professionals on behalf of persons and families with known or suspected health problems. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Be licensed by the Michigan Board of Nursing to practice as a registered professional nurse in the State of Michigan. A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university is preferred. Applicants possessing transcripts from a college or university outside of the United States will be required to provide documentation of degree equivalency from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services Applicants who are eligible to be licensed by the State of Michigan and who meet the other requirements listed above may apply and take this examination but will not be eligible for appointment until they have been licensed by or possess a valid permit from the Michigan Board of Nursing.(). The degree evaluation will be required for application processing. Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical established for this classification. Successfully complete the six (6) month probationary period. ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of modern principles, methods, materials, practices, and specialized terminology of public health professional nursing service. Ability to apply the principles, practices, and techniques of professional nursing to the functioning of Health Department Clinics, and services programs offered to schools, nursing homes, day care centers, individual homes, or other settings. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Health Division professional and support staff, and the public. Ability to cope with difficult and/or emergency situations requiring immediate decisions in accordance with Health Division policies and procedures. Ability to compile pertinent information and prepare and present oral or written technical reports to supervisors, staff, and the public. Ability to exercise mature judgment and initiative in analyzing problems and recommending solutions. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Submit to immunizations as required by the Health Division and to tuberculin skin tests or chest X‑rays at County expense. Maintain current registration with the State of Michigan Board of Nursing. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Participates in programs of instruction and services within the County such as child health clinics, immunizations, tuberculosis and sexually transmitted infection control, Medicaid, and other services at Health Department Clinics and at various out-reach sites. Provides observation and/or role modeling for baccalaureate nursing students and other allied health professionals. Promotes health of individuals, families and the community through teaching, counseling and appropriate preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitative measures, using a high degree of initiative. Engages in health education group activities by planning, developing, participating in, and teaching community and professional groups. Identifies individuals with physical or emotional illness and/or disabilities through observation and professional assessment and assists them through referrals and securing appropriate health care. Provides demonstrations and teaches nursing care which will be given by others; assumes responsibility for working with other nursing personnel in assessment of nursing needs of individuals and families using problem solving techniques in the development of nursing care plans; collaborates with physicians and dentists related to diagnostic procedures and treatment protocols. Provides patient care through planning and sharing information with other health and social agencies as needed and when appropriate. Provides nursing services at public health clinics. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments. ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to communicate to accurately convey information. Ability to use and operate medical office equipment and supplies. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed in a typical medical clinic environment as well as in patient homes, and educational or institutional settings.
