Function as a first assistant under the supervision of a surgeon and assume the role of primary scrub technologist when necessary. Responsibilities include floating between campuses and performing Endo Vascular Vein Harvest techniques for cardiac or vascular cases.
Requires graduation from an approved Surgical Technologist school and completion of a First Assistant course. Must hold a current BLS certification and successfully pass the First Assistant certification exam.
The First Assistant Practitioner must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to function as a first assistant under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a Surgeon. The employee is a specifically trained surgical technologist who demonstrates the skills, knowledge and judgment necessary to function in the assistant role. The position requires on-call responsibilities and will be assigned accordingly. The Elective First Assistant Practitioner must be flexible in every situation and able to assume the role of primary scrub technologist and float between both Erlanger East and North Campuses, when deemed necessary by the Surgical Services Director.
Education: Required: Graduate approved Surgical Technologist School, Completion First Assistant Course,
Preferred: Orthopedic Physician Assistant,
Required: Documentation/demonstrated knowledge and skills required to perform First Assistant role in surgery.
Two (2) years experience as a Surgical Technician in the operating room.
Certified Orthopedic Physician Assistant.

The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures. This is done through evaluation of direct supervisor by direct observation, in a skills lab, or discussed verbally or written. Competency can also be evaluated by a formal peer review process and/or by self assessment based on objective criteria that is reviewed and validated.
