Major Job Functions The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time: Prepares specimen using the appropriate technique required to produce an acceptable sample for evaluation by the pathologist Follows established procedures for histology quality control, CAP, JCAHO, other regulatory agencies and reports discrepancies in a timely manner Performs scheduled and as needed maintenance on equipment routinely used in specimen preparation Troubleshoots equipment, reagents, or procedural technique when problems occur Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety and specific job‑related hazards Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives Assists with the orientation of new histology lab employees Maintains work area—cleans bench, restocks supplies notifies Histology Technical Specialist of low stock Other duties as assigned
