About the role

The Nurse Extern provides high-quality, patient-centered care and assists nursing staff with activities of daily living. They perform nursing functions and higher-level procedures under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

  • Type: Per Diem The Nurse Extern, is currently enrolled and in good standing in an RN School of Nursing and has successfully completed a Nursing fundamentals course. The Nurse Extern delivers high-quality, patient-centered care by performing a variety of patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living. Under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN), the Nurse Extern assists the nursing staff in providing patient care in accordance with the Nurse Extern’s skills/training. The Nurse Extern can perform higher-level procedures once competency is achieved and knowledge has been acquired from the school curriculum. During the final practicum of nursing school and until licensure, the nurse extern may be precepted by an RN and perform aspects of patient care as deemed competent to perform with continued supervision of a registered nurse. The Nurse Extern is expected to convert to an RN position within 4 months or less of the graduation date. After this period, if the Nurse Extern cannot move to an RN role, they will be required to transfer to an alternate position and cannot continue in the Nurse Extern role.

Responsibilities

1. Assists with Patient Care Functions. 2. Delivers Indirect Patient Care 3. Communicate and Document Activities. 4. Demonstrates Leadership 5. Utilizes appropriate interpersonal skills as outlined in the Standards of Conduct. 6. Participates in the Quality Improvement Process to Improve Patient Outcomes. 7. Successfully completes department specific competency requirements and maintains a current license and certifications 8. Accurately utilizes resources for patient care. 9. Nurse Extern Cross-Trained to EKG Tech. 10. Nurse Extern Cross-Trained to Unit Secretary 11. Complies with all policies and procedures that pertain to HIPAA including the minimum necessary requirements for this position. 12. Performs and fulfills all HICS (hospital incident command system) responsibilities, assignments, tasks, and roles as directed and needed by the facility in times of emergency and/or disaster. Responsible for knowing the Hospital’s emergency codes, including the purpose and appropriate action for each, and adheres to the Hospital policies and procedures for each emergency code.

Education

Minimum: Enrolled and in good standing at a school of Nursing. Successful completion of a nursing fundamentals class. B.

Experience

Prior clinical experience in area of expertise preferred BLS Certification, American Heart Assoc. CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention), preferred. #LI-RS1

Requirements

Candidates must be currently enrolled in an RN school of nursing in good standing and have completed a nursing fundamentals course. BLS certification is required, and prior clinical experience or CPI certification is preferred.
